I agree it's got the best sound - a real free revviing soirts car sound.

Can anyone shine some light on the part of an exhaust that plays the greatest part in the way it sounds? Is it the shapes of the baffle and the structure of the holes? Is it the size of the muffler the sound its resonating in?

Or, the type of microphone and nature of the area it is being recorded in perhaps?

Be careful drawing any conclusions from these audio clips. Unless they're all taken with similar equipment under similar conditions, the clips could indicate wildly different-sounding exhausts while in reality they could sound identical.

It does have a nice sound. You have to ask yourself if you want sound, performance or what. Just because it sounds good doesn't mean it gives the best performance value. Sadly enough in most cases the louder more blatty sounding exhausts offer the better performance. They are usually less restrictive and have no or minimal resonators/mufflers. That is why all the Hondas sound like crap except for a few here and there. Next time look at the rear sections and see what Im talking about. Like Tanabe for example makes good HP gains on Hondas but sound horrible. Why? They are a straight through design with minimal bends and an almost non existent muffler on the rear section. Yes it is true that a single outlet exhaust would be the most beneficial for HP/TQ gains. The layout for the dual exhaust just isnt practical as far as free flowing design goes. You have basically two 90 degree angles in a row... The ultimate for gains and design (as well as keeping balance) would be a center exit exhaust. Then if you are looking at turbo and such stepping the piping up to a three inch diameter. Hope this helps.

A three inch centre mounted pipe would only look acceptable with a redesigned rear apron.

The rear apron is probably the least attractive (cheap looking)part of the car, so I wouldn't be too sad to give it up - but I wouldn't be happy with a ground scraping ***** either.

I'd be first in line if someone produced a rear apron and exhaust combo that had the tailpipe exiting via an enlarged rotary crest!

If anyone like's this idea - how do we make it grow legs?

I cant stand the rear apron. I dont like it at all. Yeah 3inch is a big pipe but that is pretty much industry standard when it comes to turbo performance in general. If you were going to stay NA you could get away with a smaller pipe. The center exit is the straightest most reasonably doable point of exit. You wouldnt notice the 3inch all that much if the apron design was good enough. It would be an idea worth looking into for asthetics as well as performance. For both NA and FI applications.

OK sold! The rear apron must go - and it's replacement must be finished in piano black and real mesh - not the crap plastic fake. Larger rotary accent - the centre being the exhaust port... carbon fibre may be a good look for this too!
