Thumbs down After 10,000 miles my supercat is officially dead.

I've had my supercat on for about 10,000 miles. It's only been a few months but I drive a lot.

Anyway, two weeks ago my CEL kept coming on and off. Finally it came on and stayed. Had the code pulled. It was that cat efficiency error.

Reset computer.

CEL came back on 5 miles later.

Pulled code, same code.

Reset computer.

2 miles down the road, CEL back on. Didn't bother going back to get it checked out, I know what it is.

So MY supercat lasted 10,000 miles. Almost feels like a waste for $400. It's not clogged as far as I can see, it's just more "super" than "cat" now.

Unhappy Gutless.....

Yeah, the RP has to regarded as "delicate" if not actually a "piece of ****".

I bought one from a forum member (who shall remain nameless, but will be refered to here as "scumbag").

Paid good money for the "cat", which turned out to be more of a "test-pipe", since it had no guts at all - completely burned out, no material at all inside, dead, gone to meet it's maker, bereft of innards, it was a
dead
cat.

okay -- i will have to chime in because I'm in a similar situation...

Bought the RP Supercat about 10K miles ago (oddly enough) and about a month ago started getting a CEL, had the code pulled, it was catalytic converter efficiency failure.

I was in the process of talking to Chris at Rotary Performance here in DFW (im local) and he said he would call me back but never did.... I would have called HIM back but my car got broken into and has been in the shop for the past 2 weeks. I'm in the same boat as you man because I paid 400 dollars for this and now if the cat is truly bad, i gave them 400 dollars for what 5 months worth of CAT life?

I dont want to jump to conclusions but the reason I BOUGHT this cat was from what I read - it was of course designed FOR the rotary, meant to take high heat and last forever. I will keep you guys posted beacuse im sick of this ******* CEL light caused by my (presumably) dead cat. (no turbo, no nos, nothing except a Racing beat Catback)

Im hoping they will replace the faulty cat and hopefully this one will last like it should, i wanted the extra power while still being emissions legal... if they refuse to do anything I guess all I can do is hollow how the cat to function as a straight thru pipe and then never reccommend an RP product again? I dont want to do that as I love this RP SuperCAT (when its working right)

they better replace your cat for free. I don't care what bullshit excuse they give you.

I would call Chris back. Your in DFW so it should be pretty simple to swing by. He seems to shoot straight and when i mentioned that people were having issues, he said they neded to call and he would take care of them. they are real busy right now as he is transitioning his shop over. I hope to see him at 7stock

I used to have the RP supercat on my 8 as well. When I took my car into the dealership for the recall, they said it was setting off a sensor and in order to keep my warranty they had to put a stock cat back on. I still have my RP supercat in the garage, but now I am wondering if I should put it back on or not. I only have about 7000 miles on the cat, but I don’t want to put it back on, if I am going to have to replace it soon. I am no expert, but from what I can tell the cat's "guts" are all still in good condition. The RP cat did sound real raspy (I know that is just how they are), so now I have to decide what to do from here... keep stock, put the RP back on, or get a different high flow cat. Any suggestions??

if you already have it, have paid for it you might as well use it untill it craps out before you sink more money into a replacement part. or if you dont want it, send to me.

Thanks Brillo - yeah im HOPING to get my RX8 back tommorow from the shop (the theives that broke in not only brok two windows, but scratched the paint and dented it in the rear, tore the rear leather seat, and scratched the rear deck to hell from all the glass)

After i get my keys recoded, some tint, and upgrade to the shock sensor im going to try to get this issue with chris and the SuperCAT done.

Hey Brillo do you know where chris is moving his shop? it was like a 45 minute drive for me from fort worth to their old place, would be spiffy if they were a bit closer to me

its not moving, he is just transitioning from doing performance work and service work to just performance work. Sorry I didn't make that clear the first time. He is trying to get a bunch of last minute serice stuff done and is short handed.

RP has always shot straight with me. They should be able to resolve the issue for you.

I'm not sure if i'm going to go through the hassle of it all. I had a resonator installed in mine and even if I do get an even exchange, I'd have to get another resonator and have it installed again. I know, not a huge issue, but I may just put the stock back on, give the supercat to the dumpster and forget about it.

And I had whatever version was available around May of this year.

The RP Supercat is made by Bonez, is it not? I know mine is.

I just installed mine last week. It is the newer version (from Bonez) with a heat sheild.

Before purchasing mine, I actually read consistently that the RP supercat was MORE DURABLE than others avail.??

I don't think I'm in the minority here (having Bonez brand from RP), but I don't have any rasp whatsoever either

"Bonez" is not a cat manufacturer, its just RP's name they slap on the cat from their supplier

I don’t think they guarantee no CEL. I think your Cat may be fine. Does the car perform differently? Is the CAT all busted up inside? The sensor was designed with the stock cat installed. I very well could be wrong too. Just a thought. Good Luck!

The whole point of the supercat is to free up horsepower while also cleaning the exhaust, and not getting the CEL a cat-less midpipe would cause. If I was going to get a CEL from the supercat anyway, I would have just got a cat-less midpipe.

I went over 9000 miles without a light, and to get one at just over 10,000 miles means something inside is not working correctly anymore and that is just not acceptable for a $400 product that says is advertised to pass emissions with "flying colors".

I looked at it and it looked fine. I would have put my stock one back on then but it's not currently at my place.

or you could be having the problem that is being recalled that is killing the stock cats... and it is not an issue with the rp cat..

my stock cat ran fine for 30k miles... my hi flow cat has run fine for the last 25k...
