I was reading about the rotary engines out there and a question came to my head has anyone ever made a 4 rotor renesis?

If they did would would be your opinions on it?

The 2 middle rotors would only breathe through siamiesed exhaust and intake ports, choking off their total flow potential.

Plus, I can imagine the thermodynamics of such a motor would be pretty terrible. The rotary is already a thermally inefficient motor as it is, doubling the motor size would mean tripling the cooling system capacity at least.

And what the hell would you put it in? It wouldn't fit in the RX-8 without major modifications to the frame.

 

I just it was as easy as throwing another rotor on and getting a eccentric shaft with bigger cooling system.

and i think a 4rotor would be about somewhere the same size as a ls1 but i'm not sure though.

Also sorry but what do you mean the rotary is already thermally inefficient? Again sorry for the question I'm still new to rotary engines if you could tell me or tell me where i could read it up i'd appreciate it.

I believe that there is a British shop that is making a Renesis base 3 rotor engine. And yes, it uses 2 Renesis end plates and 2 Renesis center plates. The only thing that is non-standard is a eccentric shaft that they machine. They say it works great. A 4 rotor may have a problem with keeping the eccentric shaft balanced due to the length. There would need to be a center bearing and there would be lubrication issues in getting that to work.

It would be MUCH more difficult than just throwing 2 Renesis motors together.

Same size as an LS1? I don't know about that, I've never seen a 4-rotor in person (except in a Mazda prototype factory race car) let alone next to a pushrod time machine like an LS1.

The point is moot, however, as no one yet to date has stuffed a GM V-8 (or any V-8) under the hood of an RX-8 yet, the room is pretty tight.

Rotary motors are more thermally inefficient than piston motors by comparison. The main issue is the fact that rotary engines have a combustion event with every single turn of the e-shaft, and the combustion area is smaller and highly localized, resulting in more heat concentration.

This is why (among other things) rotaries tend to run hot.

I have 4 rotors on my 8....you know the brakes have 4 of them.

there is a guy here that has built a 3 rotor renesis and I'm pretty sure he said he was working on a 4 rotor about 6 months ago - not 100% sure though ....

 

4 Rotor for thr drag.......

 

Peripheral ports would help the breathing problem.

Sure, drivability and economy go out the window - but those words shouldn't even be in any 4 rotor engine builders vocabulary.
