I will definately be in touch with your guys. It is a 75% chance I may get out early tomorrow. So with a little luck I may be able to meet you guys.

OMS - sorry to hear it is a cluster getting the hardware.

As for NASA vs the others - I like NASA a lot. I always have a good time even when track sessions are short or get shortened. I always get my fill and not just since I became an instructor. That being said, I have had a great time with BMWCCA and hope to try Seat Time at some point. TA2 says good things about MazdaDrivers too. So, there are lots of choices out there. So we have options. The one thing I miss about non-NASA events are all my friends. That plays a big part of the weekend fun. I am going to make a concerted effort to minimize far track and maximize close track. That means a heavy diet of Road Atlanta, Barber and Roebling.
Friends is what I miss most about the events, not so much the driving, but the comradery.

I have done pretty much every club, and put on my own events, and all in all, it is the friends that make the events, more so than the clubs. However, in my opinion, BMW, CRMC, NASA, and Seat-Time are my first choices.

Oh, and BTW, STeve (32VCobra) is going forged internals. HIs mustang will be under powered no more .

I made comment about the DE guys getting cut a little, and hoping that all of the racers keep their heads on straight over on the NASA forum, and got the John Deere driver all sorts of bent out of shape. oops.

I have to agree, the social aspect of the NASA weekends is a lot of fun, and part of what makes it easy to come back. But at the same time, if I am shelling out a good chunk of my hard earned money, I want to get my share of track time. My biggest complaint, is that NASA always says, if someone in your group F's up, your group will suffer the penalty. But it does not always work out that way. More often than not, the lower level DE groups are the ones that pay for it. And that to me just aint right.

I am going to really focus my efforts next year, on doing VIR, hopefully with MazdaDrivers. It looked like TA2 had a good time with them, and I think it would be really cool to run with a lot of other Mazdas, and show my support for Mazda Motorsports. At the BMW club event last weekend, they were everywhere, I would like to see it that way with Mazdas. I think we ought to try and plan a group trip, and really do it right.

I might also try to do some events with BMW, save my pennies up, and just do a full DE weekend, with no race cars.

That all said, my car is packed, gassed up, and I will be sitting here at work for the next 3 hours, trying to pass the time, till I can leave, go get her washed up, and then head over to meet the rest of the caravan. I can't wait. w00t w00t!

I just got back little while ago. I don't want to post everyone's stories, but we had a blast!.

Fri, Silver got hung up forever waiting on parts, but we had good caravan up with me, Phlash, L8, and TA2. Got to the track, set up, and we all had a late dinner with some folks from NASA once Silver made it. Much good camaredie. Not much sleep for anyone.

OnRails was there too and we got set up to go Sat. TA2 decided to get it out of the way and have an excursion in the first group out. Intermittent light drizzle in the afternoon, but not much to worry about. Very light. Kept it cool.
For me, (my second time out), this was a tough track to learn. A lot of different things to figure out and remember for a new guy. My second two sessions were backed off a little due to drizzle, so by the end of the day, I kind of had an idea of what to do - but was tentative and inconsistent.
Most of the guys were really rolling, and had some good sessions (their stories to tell)

Dinner Sat night was fun! We actually ended up missing where we planned to eat, but Silver, Phlash, L8 and I were in tears we were laughing so hard. Much better rested that night (well, except maybe Silver - he roommed with me - and even earplugs can't hold back my snoring).

DE3/4 were combined for every session, and L8 and OnRails were in DE2 together, so there were a lot of folks that got to be on track together.
I had a much better day, and used a lot of brake pad, chewed a lot of tire, knocked out my alignment on the gators at 14. (pulling left now).
There were some tire issues, pad issues, etc - but again, other folks stories.

For a new guy, that track is tough in a lotta places. Sun felt good though - alot coming together. I have more to post, so will be back.

But this was as an awesome weekend!

My Weekend Report

I had a blast at CMP! I only live about an hour away so I decided to drive down each day instead of staying overnight. I went down Friday after work basically just expecting to get registered and go through tech. To my surprise, the gang was all there and had already pretty much set up camp. I got to meet Phlash and Dbright007 for the first time. They are great guys. I had met L8Apex, SilverEIGHT, and TorqueAholic last time at CMP in February and it was good to see them again. After meeting everyone, we all headed over en masse to the tech shed. It was kind of funny when I pulled into the tech bay and the guy looked at me and said “Didn’t you just come through here?” “No, that was the other RX-8.”, I said with a big grin. After tech I headed home to get some rest in preparation for the next day (yea right, like I could sleep).

Saturday, I started my first session a little rusty. It was kind of embarrassing at first but by the end of the session I had remembered how to drive again. TorqueAholic spent the session reminding me where my turn in points should be and how to properly navigate through the carousel. By session two I had things together enough to start carrying some real speed around the course. Sessions three and four were mostly TA2 making comments like “That was the right way to do it.” or “That line was crap.” There was a little shower mid day but it didn’t really rain enough to slow things down much.

I had forgotten how much fun CMP really is. The course is really suited to our cars with lots of hard braking and twisting turns with a few good straights to wind through the gears and burn off carbon deposits. It really feels good when you do the carousel properly and the kink just dares you to have the cojones and go faster through there next time around.

The last session of the day we were able to grid up with L8Apex with Phlash in his right seat. We played follow the leader the whole session. We were really cooking around the track and getting thumbs up from the corner workers (and point-bys from the other cars on track). It was a ton of fun! By the way, word is I shoot flames when down shifting. I don’t know how this is possible but it can’t be good for my stock cat.

Sunday was more of the same. After the first session of the day, TA2 cut me loose for some solo time. I took it as an opportunity to make sure I was looking at all of the flag stations and watching my mirrors, and generally playing nice with the other cars on track. At the end of the day TorqueAholic gave me a good evaluation and recommended I go for HPDE 3. Yahoo!

All in all is was a super great weekend for me and I’m especially glad I got to spend it making some new friends in Phlash and Dbright007 and getting to know L8Apex, SilverEIGHT, and TorqueAholic better. It was such a good weekend I came straight home and signed up for Road Atlanta in August. I just had some track and I’m already thinking about my next fix. See ya’ll there!

I'm home and tired as hell. Will report later.

17" wheels and NEW shaved Toyo RA1's rock, my friends!

AWESOME vids to come. Haven't seen it but L8 and OnRails had a blast and recorded it.

I drove HPDE 3/4 and I think I have some pretty good clips as well.

OK, I am kinda still asleep. And it is Monday. But I am here, and ready to tell some tall tales.

First and foremost, thanks to NASA, for another great weekend, that was on schedule, well organized, and exceptionally fun.

The drive over on Friday was not bad, a little traffic here and there, and lots of SC police cars. But we made it, and began our setup.

Saturday morning, came very slowly, Friday night seemed to last forever. But we got to class, had a good laugh, and then got to the track. I had not been out since October, and was a bit rusty. I was also learning new tires, RA-1's, my first time on R comps, and they are so weird, and so foreign at first. once I got over the initial turn in being sooo much faster, and sharper than I am used to, I was doing a little better. Session 1 was ok, not great, but it knocked the rust off, and got the cob webs out. Phlash did a great job as the right seat ho.

The afternoon sessions were much better. And then session 4 came around. HOLY CRAP was that fun. I have said it a bunch already to those that were there, I will say it again. It was by far, without a doubt, the best track session I have EVER had. I followed OnRails the whole time, and we were cookin. We went through the field, one by one, passing everything we came up to. And yes, he shoots flames, sometimes it looks like he has pilot lights on his exhaust tips. Don't get too close, he might burn your bumper off. It was a freakin blast, and the other drivers in our group thought is was pretty cool too, and we got a lot of compliments from the other drivers in the group, and that feels good, that your peers thought like they did. I have what could be one of our best track videos ever, and once I get it dumped to my website, i will be sure to let everyone know.

Sunday was a little different, not as fast, but i tried to play with turning DSC off, at first only for the back section, and then for the whole lap, for about 3 laps. but a few big brain farts, and some serious lack of focus, made me turn it back on, and finish the session.

Then Phlash soloed me, a first, and that was fun, still got to go out and play with OnRails, which was what most of Sunday was, playing lead follow, and that my friends, is a lot of fun. Had a good scary moment that tested my nerves at the end of the day, with a red cobra, I will try to share that vid with everyone as well, I found out that people braking in the kink, is bad, but quick decisions, and smooth inputs can avoid what could be a really bad thing. Ended the day on a good note, with the car in one piece just like it arrived, albeit minus a LOT of brake pad. CMP is really hard on brakes. I won't go back there without a brand new set of Hawks.

Phlash, thanks for right seating it with me, I enjoyed it, had a blast, and was glad you did to. At least the giggling like a schoolgirl, and arms up like you were on a roller coaster made me think you had fun.

OMSGlad you got your wheels and tires, and all their parts. I know you would not have had nearly as much fun passing everyone in DE3/4 on 400 Treadweard all seasons. You were "hauling the mail" out there, and shooting fire while you were at it, it was fun to watch.

OnRailsThanks for playing lead follow, that was truly awesome. i had more fun than should be allowed by law. you brake so late, it inspires. following you made me faster, and made me keep up. I was no doubt the fastest I was all weekend, while trying not to get burnt by your flame throwing car. The sound of two rotaries at WOT for 20 minutes, was pure joy.

TA2Good to see you again. I have a few pictures of you, one showing some glowing rotor. Sorry your pads got burnt up on Sunday, but I know you were having fun anyway.

dbright007last but not least. I am glad you joined us, and really glad that you had a good time. You made huge improvements over the two days, and that was just what I could see from the outside. You got faster, and better as the weekend went by. It looked like you were having a blast. The kool aid rocks. I have some good pictures of you too, and will try to get them posted soon.

I had a freakin blast, and can't wait to do it again. I won't be driving RA, but I am hoping to do RR, and am already signed up for Barber. This hobby is just too much damn fun.

Videos and pictures as soon as I can get to it, I promise.

OK, long winded, and time to work...

Guys, I'm really sorry but I just don't have time to post without thinking a little concentration. Due to a change in my flight schedule I have no time to contribute or work on vids. I did take a quick peak at mine (vids, no wise cracks Phlash ) and they are boring as hell, just me passing everyone in HPDE 3/4. Don't ever let ANYONE tell you that you have to have torque. If your 8 is hooked up for the track and you are in a zone, you are going to be a HUGE factor on the track.

Ah, screw it... I'm gonna put one quick clip up.... give me a few min.

Talking

Where to start????? Geez, what a weekend. With nothing going on Friday morning I took my time, packed and met Dano, Travis, and TA2 at Taco Hell. Walkies on, had a great trip down and great conversation as everyone caught up. Checked into the Colony Inn and got to the track just as tech started. Unpacked our crap, changed some tires, ran through tech, and waited, and waited, and waited on the ongoing saga that was OMS’s Friday the 13th…….he showed up finally with all new gear in hand, unloaded and we all left to eat….wooped….time for bed…..

SATURDAY, SATURDAY, SATURDAY !!!!! Get up, get up, get up !!!! Come on Travis, time is a wastin’ !!! After the big all you can eat track ho breakfast at the Inn, we headed out and did all hands………..it was time……WOOHOO!!!! TRACK!!!!!

I had two students this time around on a track I have never been on……instructors had the first session…time to go……I got out, followed some folks that had been there around a bit at a nice easy pace……..GREEN FLAG!!! WOOHOO!!!! My weekend was about to sour……got up to speed, brakes good, throw into a corner and SURPRISE!!!!! Rear end rotation…..a lot of it…….WTF???? Next decent turn, same thing…lets try a different coil over setting, no change…went in checked tires, dropped pressure a little (did it half a dozen times), very little, if any, change. CRAP!!! Spent two days trying every damn setting in the world, with no luck, car just wanted to rotate too much. Not snap rotate, just gradual, slow, WTF kind of stuff. Made the mistake (never again) of taking one of my students out and rotated a little too much with him in the car……on track, but a foul none the less. Stupid, stupid, stupid !! Thankfully, it was all taken in stride and things just went forward from there…..I had a blast this weekend, despite the frustrations with the car…..I just had to step it down....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Gonna look at two things now…..re-eval the rear RB sway bar (as others have done) and time to go have the alignment checked out again…it’s almost time anyway.

Dano – Deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep Breath………Damn, what a Jekyll & Hyde weekend…..Saturday was good. Things were taken slow as we worked on line, turn in’s and markers. We also spent a good deal of time learning how to use the paddle shifting (what gear and where). It rained a little on us that forced us to slow things down a little and soak some stuff in…breathe, breathe…….good day…….SUNDAY!!!! OMG!!! The boy got laid Saturday night!! What the hell?? Today was brake day….and did Dano hoped on that like a mad man!! If I’m lyin’ I’m dyin’..the boy picked up 10 to 15 mph on the very first session out…..who the flock am I riding with here??? As Lego would state, “the boy pulled out his tampon….” Gear changes were right on and turns 7 to 11 were an AWESOME ride !!! Spot on, time and time and time again!! 14 turned out to be the biotch turn for us….it just doesn’t play well with the auto, try as we might, we couldn’t get that thing in a lower gear there…..Braking distance was cut down by at least a third. He even though he’ll never admit it, the boy actually giggled a time or two and he pulled of a couple really nice controlled drifts into 8-9. Dude, you should be proud as hell of the things you picked up and the progress you made. It was a great pleasure and joy to be a part of your weekend. Can’t wait till next time!

Travis-relaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaxxxxxxxx……First session out, I figured I can’t beat up on this boy any more than he’s doing to himself………..geez……………..But then, out of nowhere, on the wings of angels, the second session came. The mojo gods laid their hands on L8 and said…….relaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaxxxxxxx. BAM!!! Holy crap……lets wear out some brakes now shall we??? Got corner?? Bring it on!!!! Travis owned CMP turns 2 through 11. 2 through 5 were a thing of beauty…..traffic that was everywhere at times was a non-issue as Travis managed his way through all of it without breaking a sweat. He started talking himself through the course and OMG, I’m at Six Flags!!! I’m giddy as a little girl and Travis hits dead on, time and time again! Second and third sessions were awesome as we play cat and mouse with the girl (really nice by the way, even with the pierced nose) in an M3……side note….I spoke with her later and told her what a hell of a job she was doing…she asked me if I was by any chance driving the gray RX that had been playing with her all day, I hung my head and said “no…….not me…….I wish” but then I perked up and stated “but, it is my student”. She stated she was impressed and that her instructor had made the same comment…….OK back on topic. Then came the forth and final session of the day. Everyone was already on cloud nine. We just happened to line up behind onrails. It was time…..the planets lined up, the waters parted, the skies turned blue, and time stood still. I got to ride every roller coaster in the country that session……video will do no justice for the ride……..”Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee” I was screaming out……Hell of an end to the day !! Sunday continued the trend as we slowed down just a tad to check out no DSC and the like, but still a grand day. Congrats L8, hell of a show and a great time !! Relaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx………..

Silver-Congrats on the new gear, they are soooooooooooooo nice. And I have stated it before and I will again, you have improved so much it scares me. I really enjoyed the ride Sunday morning and am glad that things continued to work well for you as you came down off the top of the kink bump. Keep it up!!

Onrails-FINALLY…..we got to meet. And what a pleasure it was!!! You have some mad driving skills my friend…..you can dive corners with the best of em……..I hope you continue to drink the kool-aid with us. See you at RA……….

TA2- Sooooooooooooooooo glad you got that spin stuff out of the way early for us (I got your back Sunday…). I hope you had a good time despite the ongoing brake issue (I bet you carry more spares now). Thanks for all your help, input, great sense of humor!!

Despite my frustrations, I had a great time. I owe that LARGELY to folks I got to take this trip with. Truly, one gets blessed to have one good friend to be with. We have been blessed with many. The scope, depth, and varieties of talent is extraordinary, the atmosphere is electric. As Travis stated, “if you could just can the rush/high of a weekend like this, you be rich beyond your wildest dreams.” With the friends we have made and the times we share during these events, we are already very, very rich.

Thanks all……c-ya at RA

wow it sure sounds like a great time guys! Wish I could have been their.
Phlash---2 things come to my mind about the rotation thing---watch the amount of "rake" in the chassis. The 8 really likes for the front to be lower than the rear and maybe bars. Not sure about the latter. Is this a rear end loose on turn in or is it on power exit?
What settings are you running---too much neg and traction starts getting limited?
Ok who will be the next to go the 17 route? MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE!
Silver I cant wait to follow you at Road Atlanta.

Great stories guys. I spoke to a lot of you on teh phone Sunday night and I really could feel the electricity. You all had a great time and I am happy for you.

Silver - the video is great. I can see your car control skills are very goods as you catch the car on track out on several corners.

Phlash - add some toe in on the back (1/32" if you are at zero or 1/16" if you have some rear toe already). Put the stock rear bar on. Thats where I would start. The bar is an easy 15 minute job at home.

See ya'll at Road Atlanta. I'm signed up for TTD.
