OD, you of all people will appreciate this. Going in this week, new heads, cam, new valve train, , and maybe a new oil-pan (windage). Looking for 300whp at the crank.
Next build will be a 289 (you heard right) with strong bottom end and low compression (figure out what goes here ..... ) But, that is not till next year.

Hey STF--- go with a 302 build instead of the 289, the modern block/lower end and aftermarket parts are MUCH better --- i have a build that will get you almost 400hp and almost 400 of torque with a great power band, running on pump gas, carburator, solid, dependable and a redline of 6K. Interested?

OD, got a GREAT deal on a 347 kit with aluminum heads. 400whp. I figure, that shoudl be enough . The rod angle isn't the greatest, but there are guys out there with 408w, who swear it shouldn't be a problem. I figure I can spin it 5k, which should be enough for now.

5 K on a stroker should not be a problem--should go 5K all day. Lightweight heads are good--know what kind? The porting of the heads, valve placement and sparkplug placement are the secrets to good recip heads.
the power on these fords come from matching the heads, cam, valvetrain and intake. If he has a dyno on the engine get it before you buy--as you know you want use able power not just a peak number. That size of engine needs to have a good bit of torque from 2K up. No substitute for cubic inches on the track!
With only 3K to work with you may be changing gears a lot---4 speed or 5 speed?
a small block ford sure sounds sweet

Happy New Year!
STF, OSCD, - Not that it would tell you anything you don't already know, but I will have to get the specs of my bro-in-laws stang. Completely different application, his is a drag car.
But he does all his own work, you would probably enjoy hearing it, and have seen his dyno charts that are in the 650hp range.
13 days to TGPR! w00t!

I am going with a matched head from a shop here who builds race boats. He makes motors that turn 6k all day in rough waters, so on-track shouldn't be an issue.
As for tranny, I already have installed a custom road race tranny, with different gearing, and no overdrive. 5th gear is .8, instead of 1, so fifth is still usable.

Boat engines and track engines are different--as you know. They are not too worried about a wide power band.
The heads i like are the trick flow twisted edge kind. As you know it is not how big of a port it is the getting the air to flow the fastest through the port. That is where these heads excel. Dont even net a 750 size carb---650 cm will actually be the best.
will like to hear how it turns out.
Just a little tweaking and you are running with the ls6's
i am trying to figure out how to get my power to the ground, throttle response, and thinks of the new lines I will have to take.

OD, I will be happy to help with the lines. I am used to driving higher HP RWD cars, so grab me at your first event, and I will be happy t ride along.
Also, thanks for the info, I think I am loosing focus (my crew chief says ), and I 'should' be focused on suspension. So, this coming weekend, cam and heads on the stock 302, as well as a leak down test to validate compression. If all goes well, and compression is strong, then I am going to use this motor for this year, and save for another.
The funny part of this is, my father, who hasn't been supportaive of any of my track endeavors since I got the Evo, is now 'all of a sudden' helping me. He actually called one of his friends at Yates, and started chasing down scales, springs, and a 358 block for my next build. This from a guy who woudln't even help me corner weight the Evo.
I hope he stays involved, the last time he helped me, I had 32 track records, and 6 national titles.
