There should simply be a stock class, that doesn't allow you to adapt anything but tires (not even rims).
And only street tires would be allowed and for once there would be a possibility to race competitively for little money.

Nothing to discuss. Just go to www.scca.org and download the rules. It is free and will save you a lot of questions.

btw only US market cars are stock legal. A few guys have ran cars from Canada but you better have full documents that show the only difference is the gauges.
No you can not use 16" wheels on the 6spd car, Mazda never built it that way, you have to run 18"s in stock.

As far as cost.... I bought one set of SSR comps, one set of Konis, front swaybar, built my own exhaust and a KN air filter.

$1900 SSR comp
$550 Konis
$200 swaybar
$150 exhaust
$900ish Kumho V710s

tot $3700 this will change depending on how many tires you use per year.

-$2000 about what I won from Mazda and Kumho
=$1700 out of pocket.

That is cheap racing to me.
Had I won more than two events all year I think I could have broken even. Now for next year all I HAVE to keep buying is tires, everything else is done. I spent way more than that every year on my Corvette. Trust me we spent way more on fuel and hotels than car parts.

I agree it's inexpensive comparitively speaking. I guess I just don't understand why the stock classes are not running on street tires (double wheel swap and extra costs).

(Just to clarify: I meant the 5 speed RX-8 which is running on 16" wheels and is of course not available in the US.)

An alternative might be to buy a FR125.

btw the top guys in the street tire SCCA natl classes STS, STX, STU run shaved street tires and you can bet they all have extra wheels and they did not drive to natls on them. Also some high end street tires cost as much or more than race tires. Then you shave them and they dont last much longer than race tires anyway.

I think that I will go with 710's for sure, and possibly the enkei RP02-J's. They are "said" to be 18 or so pounds a piece. Any input on these wheels would be appreciated. Enkei stopped making these and I have gotten an outstanding price quote on them.

I looked at those, but thought the offset was out of the range acceptable for stock. Does anyone know the range of offsets that is legal for stock. Is it 45 to 55mm? Also, if you add a spacer, does it increase or decrease the offset?

Everything I see on the Rpo says 42mm offset, not stock legal. You could try to mill the back of the wheel to get it in spec.

Is it alright to manipulate the back of the wheel?

only if you want to risk it breaking

btw, 1/4" = 6.35 mm therefore the max offset range for the RX-8 in stock is 43. 65 - 56.35 mm

There are very few options for a light wheel... At least one that is legal in BS. As far as the enkeis go, it looks like the only wheel is the rpm2 - 19-20 lbs a piece. Did anyone at nationals us stock oem wheels?
