No, pretty sure they are not allowed and it gets hot in there in full gear.

passenger side lexan is allowed in NASA while on track. but i would mostly just use them when the car is parked, and not use car cover, since i transport the car on open trailer.

I saw the write up on mazdaspeed and went looking for a build thread. This is a great build and the car looks amazing.

Have you had a chance to run it against any serious STL cars yet, like Steyn's STL car?

I didn't see anything about engine development either, has anything been done there? I hear rumors of the 2.0 liter cars making north of 210 with the restrictor.

The main problem with the Rx8 in STL is that Huffmaster blew everyone away in its early days so it got the restrictor. Since then there havn't been any serious Rx8 builds for STL.

Thanks.

Haven't been door to door with Steyn yet - although we both run under the OPM tent and the cars are frequently parked door to door. I'm about 50 pound slighter but not enough to make up for the current torque difference. I'm sure he would walk away from me in the current state of development.

Yes, working on engine development as we speak. Hondas are certainly north of 210 currently even with their new restrictor for 2018. I was at 205/134 last time on the dyno but that was before any significant development. New exhaust and Adaptronic going in this month.

You are correct. SCCA came down hard on the car after the Huffmaster years. It was at 2870 pound with a 45mm plate at one point. Hand I've written many letters to SCCA asking that they give the RX8 a little love. Currently have 2800 pounds and 55mm plate.

Hope to have it at the Runoffs in 2019.

A few updates. New exhaust is done. BlackHalo long-tube headers to a custom 3.5" collector, then 3.5" SS to a CoastFab muffler. Heat wrapped then expanded mesh to protect heat tape from curbs and inevitable "offs".

15 pound Braille battery was not adequate. That combined with the long run to the starter (battery, through firewall to kill-switch on roll bar, back through firewall and down to starter) was ill conceived from the start and the source of un-ending frustration. Version 2.0 is a Odyssey PC950 race battery on the passenger floor for a short run from battery to kill-switch to starter.

This freed up the passenger firewall for the Sohn reservoir.

Also added is an Adaptronic plug-and-play ECU. Going for a ride on the dyno Friday.

Oh, brand new engine harness. hacked engine-bay harness to remove everything that is not needed which saved about 10 pounds.

wow saved 10 lbs on slim engine harness? i gotta start stripping my harness too. been too lazy and worried bout cutting something im not supposed to and have to troubleshoot why it's not running.
looking forward to see any power gain from header and exhaust.

do you have to run stock intake box for your class?

Don't quote me on the harness but it's somewhere between 5 and 10 pounds but I'm running nothing but MAF sensor, ABS, brake lights, Atm pressure sensor (now fuel pressure) and PS in that harness. No lights, fuel pump, fans, etc. Almost all the relays are gone.

No, can run any airbox/filter.

Adaptronic is MAP based so MAF sensor is not needed but it uses intake air temp which is part of that sensor.

The factory wiring and CAN bus is still in there and sending signals to the Motec, but nothing (or at least not the right signals) are making to the ABS and PS. Speedsource, and the drivers, can’t remember if they were running ABS/PS at all in Grand Am. Without rewiring the whole Motec the solution seems to be running a twin harness with factory CAN and ECU just to the ABS/PS, the issue may still be getting the right signals through to the right components.
This is what I was referring to.

Thank you for taking the time to post details. Fantastic work. How far West do you make it? We run in the midwest and I'm wondering if I'll ever get to see it

Yeah, I've got an AEM unit around here somewhere. It's just lower on the priority list.

Geko - no further West than Birmingham. Maybe COTA one year.

That’s a shame but I understand. Longest tow I’ll do at the moment is 8 hours! Keep up with the updates

Speedway Engineering bar. 1.25" diameter, I don't know the wall thickness.
Sway Bars and Parts

Billet mounts from somewhere online (you will bend the ones from Speedway)

that was me, not Adax. We managed to get the factory PS steering sorted as well. And put back in a factory rack and now we’re running factory PS

So you got the CAN working with the Motec? What was the solution? Having similar problems with Adaptronic but they are working on a solution.

“Doc” from the old Roar racing team came to the shop and got it sorted out for us. Not exactly sure what all he did. He worked on the wiring, ECU and Motec for almost 2 weeks. He got the PS and ABS sorted.

Interested to see what gains you'll see from the Adaptronic and huge exhaust.

Fantastic build. Good to see someone else rising from the TechSport ashes - your solution was better (clean start). And how about that power! Nice output.

Thanks for the detailed account. I'm totally thinking of stealing that mesh wrap over the heat wrap idea. Mine is holding up well this year, but if I don't have to re-wrap every year or so, I'd be happier.

Best,
-j

Me too. Still dealing with ABS issues with the Adaptronic so I haven't really tuned it yet. The off-the-shelf tune was something like 198/143 but it was rich due to the restrictor plate I run. I haven't been able to really evaluate the exhaust on a dyno but it's looking like same HP and a bit more torque.

Welcome to the expanded metal shielding idea. It's working well and I'm wishing I had done the same on the header. The heat tape gets fragile over time.
