Replacement Brake Rotors for the track
I'd like to get an extra set of rotors as a backup in case I ever have issues during a track weekend. At the rate I've been going through pads, I'm sure I'll need them eventually...
I searched and there didn't seem to be any threads that were specific to track use so please don't flame me.
Anyway, what is a good replacement source for OEM/blank style rotors? Or is there a good aftermarket alternative? I noticed that Rosenthal Mazda doesn't sell the rotors, only pads. How much should I expect to pay? I've heard dealers charge $174 for each of the fronts, sounds pricey to me.
I'm looking for blank rotors, not drilled/slotted as I'd like to keep the car B Stock legal for autocross because I'll be doing a couple of autocross days in addition to 10-15 track days this year.
Is there a good aftermarket rotor alternative that doesn't rust? I tried using high temperature caliper paint but the heat from the track scorched the stuff.

anyone ever see these cryogenic frozen rotors from Tire Rack? Tire Rack usually sells stuff that can stand up to track use.

and for some reason, the rear rotors in that link aren't ventilated... wierd...

I am looking for the same thing. Mazmart, in Atlanta is a Mazda Recycler. They have several 8's and I just priced two front rotors for $125. They quoted $75 each or $125 for both. www.mazmart.com

I got mine from Adreneline Racing. Cooked them in 1 track day. For street only use they are ok, track use definitely not. If you are going for track use, the OEM ones are actually very good. I would use those or slotted ones.

if you are going to track time you should seriously consider forking out for quality 2-piece rotors, the good one's use much superior material that don't warp and will last much longer

Would the one piece rotors from Racing Brake be sufficient. They are half the price of the 2 piece, and if they are made with similar materials and quality control, they might be the most economical for the once a month tracker. They look like good equipment, I just wonder if it would be that big of an upgrade over stock. The Speedsource team raves about the stock rotors for Grand AM racing. So they can't be all that bad. I have only had trouble with the stock pads on track, not the rotors. And my rotors now have over 40k miles on them.

Speedsource runs the OE brake rotors, but for all you know they replace them after every race. I believe the GA rules do not allow them to use alternate rotors.
I suppose the question is what happens after you install more aggressive pads, but you can try them and let us know the long term results.

NOw, on to your second statement. This is exactly why I want to look at a good upgrade on the rotors, without spending over $300 per rotor. Using aggresive track type pads for track days, could over the course of a few track days damage the OEM rotors. No one in our track group has had a problem yet, but that doe snot mean we won't. I only use my Hawk pads for track duty, and just want to explore all of my options when it comes time to replace my rotors, and i have a feeling that will be this year.
Does anyone on the forum have experience with the rotors from Racing Brake?

I suppose it just depends on what "for the track" means. Out there having fun on a weekend is a lot different than out there pushing it at 11/10ths.
It's easy to get hung up on initial up-front costs without considering the overall total cost with maintenance/replacement over the long haul. I'm not trying say what's best for your particular situation though.

Click the following links and see how RacingBrake club racing rotors work on these races:
GOTO Racing: 25 hours Thunderhill Enduro race.

RacingBrake rotors were the only rotors that never need replacement during this 25 hours brake ordeal among those survived teams. This was a historical record.
GOTO racing is sponsored by RB this year for their Legacy and WRX on USTCC Grand AM cup.
Tom Long of MX-5 racer won his Spec Miata 2005 Championship by using RacingBrake rotors. His comments: “With unparrellel braking ability, these are by far the best on the market!”

RacingBrake rotors helped Joel Lipperini won his 2004 SCCA SSC National Champion, here is his testimonial.

Our latest brake development on brake for professional racings:
RB is working with Sylvain Tremblay – The owner and chief racer of Speedsource to test our two-piece stock replacement rotor (RX8). He will be racing on Grand AM cup so he must use stock caliper but can use two piece rotors. (This test was delayed due to the needed correction on hardware)
RB is working with Tom Long on 2006 MX-5 Spec Miata rotor which is a newer (bigger) rotor. The rotor has to replicate to OE configuration. i.e. plain braking surface, no slot, no drill.
RB is working with Hawk – The official sponsor of SCCA to test their latest new racing compound ( DTC’s) to go with our club racing rotors to assure an optimal performance under extreme braking conditions.
For now our club racing rotors offer for these applications:

Note: These club racing rotors are built for professional racing purpose, and therefore will produce the optimal result only if more aggressive motorsports brake pads are used at extreme temperature, although they still can be used on street but the performance difference may not be noticeable.
Meantime please allow us to introduce ourselves. RacingBrake’s parent company TPM Products has been in brake business for 20 years, a company dedicated to research and development on brake rotor material and brake system design and have been dealt with most prominent brake companies in the US and Canada on subcontracting and wholesales level therefore we are not well known by most consumers.
Here at RacingBake we don’t do big talk but just deliver good brake, we commit to the investment of our own tooling and controlling the entire production process from design to finishing products with lot number to trace. Our customers will soon find out how good our products are after they installed and use them.
We appreciated the response and support from the RX-8 community and would like to assure you guys out there that buying from RB is always worry free (we offer money back guarantee) and our quality and price would be hard for any competition to match. We suggest you guys listen to the hard facts from those people already installed and experienced the products.
Please let us know if we can be of any more help with your brake need.
Thank you.
