Possible to carry B-Stock equipment in car without trailer? 4 wheels + jack + impact

Quick question for the B-Stock Autocrossers here...

Can you carry 4 245/35/18 V710s on the OEM wheels with jack and impact gun in the RX8? Does it fit well? How do you squeeze them in? I do recall carrying 4 street tires at a time, but street tires are narrower than V710s.

I used to own a Miata and had to use a trailer. I'd prefer not to use a trailer if I didn't have to, and was just wondering if the RX8 can carry all of this without issues. The trunk opening is a bit tight and i have doubts about squeezing a tire in there.

Thanks,
Jonathan

4 wheels mounted with 245's fit fine. When I picked up my rx8 in December, two of us drove it back to MN from Arizona with 4 wheels, two duffel bags, several spare shocks and parts, small tool kit... still with room for the passenger to recline a bit. Putting the wheels in the back seat sideways leaves more room for front seat passengers, but make sure you put a towel or something protective over the center console.

Yep, this was one of the primary reasons I sold my C Stock Miata for an RX-8. The rear seats are almost perfectly designed to hold a set of Stock legal wheels and tires.

In '06 I rode up to Nationals in the B Stock RX-8 I was co-driving. We had a full set of wheels and tires in the back seats, a jack, tools, jackstands, cooler, 2 gallon water bottle, and luggage for two people for a week in the trunk. We drove 500 miles to the event like this, and both of us had plenty of room to sit comfortably (i.e., we didn't have to jack the seat up funny to fit the wheels in).

17x9 wheels with 255/40-17s will fit in the back seat as well (same overall OD but wider)

Thanks guys, I appreciate the replies. Sounds like this can be done even with a passenger which is very good. I do remember having to throw a tire in the front seat before, so maybe I wasn't using all of the RX8s space to my advantage.

Quick question about the wheels in the back seat. I couldn't tell by what you meant by "sideways", do you stack two tires flat on each other per seat or would two tires be side by side standing up per seat?

I'd test this myself, but I do not have the wheels and tires yet!

Thanks again,
Jonathan

the way I've always carried them is upright, with the wheels oriented 90degrees from where they'd normally mounted on the car. not 'stacked'. but I can't say I've tried hauling 'em 'stacked', so not to say it couldn't be done.

I don't have any big fatty tires, but putting in a set of 225/40/18 snows for rallycross works fine standing the tires up side by side. I do have to tilt the seatback forward to get them in and then if I push it back all the way, the seat feels noticeably harder. This probably isn't an issue for shorter drivers. This also works for my slightly larger diameter 225/45/18 street tires. All the tools that I need fit in the trunk with tons of room to spare, and don't forget that you still have the floor behind the front seats to put stuff if you don't like to pack light.

"Sideways", as in upright... yet perpendicular to the direction they're mounted on the car. The total width of two wheels is less than the diameter... and in my above example, leaves more room for the front seat to move back.

edit: Doh... didn't type fast enough :p

Perfect! Makes complete sense now. I didn't even think of that.

Perhaps my funny stacking/orientation may be why I had to carry one in the passenger seat last time .

Thanks again guys.

Yep, stack 'em sideways and upright, two per back seat.

I usually put them vertically in the back seat in the same orientation as they would go on the car, but I'm short so I don't need the clearance behind the seat. I'm gonna try the other direction this weekend and see if it works any better.

I admit, I did not perform a search prior to asking. I confess, its something I should have done.

Thanks again everyone.

Yeah, being a pr-ck is just an added bonus

JK, Team's right, there's a ton of knowledge, detail and color available in some of the older threads. I think "back in the day" when this board was newer, many of the posters were more passionately involved in the discussions, there was more experimentation going on (because of the newness of the RX8) and the information derived fresher...there's much to learn in reviewing those early discussions, which detail more thoroughly the set up process of the people who, ultimately, have been very successful autocrossing the RX8. Of course, that's not to say that all the answers have been discovered or that further development of stock or prepared set ups is fruitless, but on items like tire brand, size, pressures, lot of us have been there, seen that, done that, got the t-shirt...the fun is in finding the older threads that detail the trials and experimentation

I know.

I don't think I ever gave an indication that I thought you were bring a *****. I also fully agree that I should have searched before asking. I admit, it was something I hadn't done and will take it into consideration next time.

Thanks again and I appreciate everyone's feedback.

Well, this was the most recent thread I could find on this topic, so I'm posting this here. Back when I was looking to see if 285s would fit in the back seat, not may people had tried it, and nobody had pictures. So here are some pics on how I fit 285 Hoosier A6s on stock rims in the back of my car.

The first pic is how I placed them for a long distance trip. I placed the center two up on the arm rest and tilted them out for a better view out the rear window. In the 2nd picture, you can see the right side in the lower position. I found that by placing the center tires up, you can get a little more room for the seat to go back, but you sacrifice some viewing area out the rear window.

you'd be better off laying them down on their side stacked two high on each side, I've had four 295 Hohos in there taking them down to the tire shop for mounting

I would recommend putting down a blanket or moving quilt to protect the interior even with the tire covers on

I put them 2 deep laying against the back seat, in the blackwatch bags. So, the tires are parallel to the back seat, facing forward. You lift one up so it rests on the center console and the side pillar, and then the other one slides in front of it. Same thing on both sides, even 285s fit just fine like that. You can also slide the front seats all the way back. Jack, air tank, impact, gloves, backpack, etc., all fit in the back just fine. There's more than enough room for me to go to a 2-day Packwood event with a codriver, and store all of our stuff to run the event and to sleep for a night in the car.
