Just curious , how is it the mazdas can run an engine that did not come with the car originally . I imagine all the other GT cars would have ....."
Two different "prep" levels. Rolex rules balance the on track performance of two different levels of prep. One level is for production tubs, with factory type engines and chassis. The second level allows for more liberal preparation, with tube frame cars, and alternate powerplants of the same manufacturer. This allows for diversity in the field. The Pontiacs fall under the same type prep level as the RX8's. The production ones are FWD, and definitely don't come with V8 power. By looking at the results, I'd say they actually do a good job leveling the playing field.
And, make no mistakes, those stock appearing 997's are purpose built racecars.

thanks for that explanation. I've seen the GT3s race here in NZ and I know how quick they are so those Mazdas must be very special .
does Mazda still make the 20Bs for racing or do you use old cosmo engines ?

The Spencer car from what I understand wasn't able to be ready in time. The GoldinBro car had problems with their shocks and weren't able to continue. Last I talked to them (~7:30pm) they were waiting to the Penske guy to show up.
They got the drive train sorted out with the transaxle now. They told me they're going to continue throughout the season.
