My 2007 HPDE/TT Season Recap

Last weekend was my final event for the 2007 season. It was an action packed season full of used up tires, brake pads, oil, brake fluid, gear oil, and misc shop supplies. I went through 3 sets of new HP+ pads and revisited a few sets of semi used sets. I also used up 2 sets of R compounds and finished up a set of Azenis. I made some great new friends and spent too much money on this addiction. That said, there are no regrets and I am going to do it all over again in 2008. Here is a run down of the season...

February
Carolina Motorsports Park with NASA-SE. This event was aptly named the “Winter Meltdown” but it was so cold, nothing was melting. I remember morning temps in the low 20s. Despite the cold we enjoyed the first taste of track of the year.

March
Road Atlanta with Peachtree BMWCCA. This was a 3 day weekend with Peachtree BMWCCA. The track had just undergone resurfacing and the new surface was awesome. The BMWCCA puts on an excellent DE event and this was no different. Sessions ran like clockwork and the only thing missing was my RX8 friends.
Road Atlanta with NASA-SE. This was party time. It was the 3rd annual gathering of the GA RX8 Club at RA in March with NASA and we organized a club party. We had great food and lots of drink. Many GA Club members were in attendance. It was cold as hell as we all stood around the massive grill trying to warm up.

May
Barber Motorsports Park with Heart of Dixie BMWCCA. Yet again it was an awesome track weekend marred only by the absence of my RX8 brethren.

June
Roebling with NASA-SE. What a fun track to run! We had an excellent showing and some guests showed up as well. It was great meeting Swoope (beers).

July
Road Atlanta with Peachtree BMWCCA – another brilliant 3 day weekend with tons and tons of track time. I feel like a broken record here... I missed the RX8 boys.

August
Road Atlanta with NASA-SE - 1st Time Trial event with a 1st place in TTD and a TTD track record.

September
Road Atlanta with Peachtree BMWCCA. These guys put on a fantastic DE. I highly highly recommend them. This was a 3 day weekend but I only did Sat/Sun.
Roebling with NASA-SE - 2nd Time Trial event with a 1st place finish and a TTD track record. I could get used to this.

October
Barber with NASA-SE - 3rd Time trial event with a 1st place finish and a TTD track record. This was the season finale for NASA-SE and we had our banquet and awards. There was lots of free beer too. I came in 2nd in TTD for the year.

November
Barber with PBOC. The season ender for me. I had a lot of fun running a relaxed pace on track and just enjoying the spectacular track and its excellent facilities. The bathrooms have automatic urinals and sinks!

Final thoughts... I started tracking the RX8 in September 2004 and have been hooked since. This year I wanted to instruct with some other groups and I did so. I enjoy the family atmosphere at NASA events and the tight organization of a BMWCCA event. I enjoy working with other drivers and helping them stay safe on track and wring out some more performance out of their cars. Most of all, I enjoy driving my car near the limit on road courses. I feel lucky to have met a fantastic group of friends who share my passion for this sport. We’ll be friends forever. I am also lucky to have a wife who supports me in this madness. Thanks Mrs TA! I hope that 2008 will be equally fun and our RX8 family of track hoes continues to grow (other cars welcome too such as Celine, Lyndon’s bitch).

Head on south next year (Sebring) and I'll try to catch Roebling.
FYI, NASA Florida is working on a Stark, FL (new venue) date for early '08.

Nice writeup TA - I commented more on the local site.

SouthFL - Nasa-SE is also looking at Starke, and have heard they want to do a dual event with Nasa -FL early season. No new news on it lately.

Glad to see your '04 RX-8 is holding up well after all these years of tracking it.
