1st of all--never compare a 10/1 hp/lb ratio car to one that is 15/1. All race tracks have straights.
Never compare a 4 wheel drive car to a 2 wheel drive car----GTR versus porsche comes to mind
Never compare a front wheel drive to a rear wheel drive.
Never compare a prepared car with oem
The rx8 brakes are in par/better than porsche--even though porsche has the rear engine weight to use. That may be good for straight line braking but turn in's and mid corner gets a little tricky for porsche. Trail braking in a porsche is a MUCH different thing than with the rx8.
Track braking is not all slowing for the turn dude.
HP pulls on the straight is usually not due to any driver skill ( corner exit etc excluded). Hell I can take a 700hp mustang/camareo on a long straight and blow any porsche off the track----but that is not the point---right?
If I had my choice--right now over a new Porsche boxer or a new R3--guess which one I would take? And the new boxer is a hell of a good car. Just like the new mustang 5.0.

By the way --look at a track vid I posted (OD at Rd Atlanta)--maybe that can help you with your decision.
Bascially you cant loose with either choice!

Here's the thing tmak - The OP said he won an RX-8 and was considering selling it - maybe - or buying a Porsche because he's always wanted one - and how it compared to Porsches at the track.

How did that conversation get perverted into your "the RX-8 is slow and you will be disappointed with it that's why I sold it." and "I know what's fast and what isn't"? Oh i know, you joined the conversation, deja vu all over again.

The well know fact the RX-8 is not **the fastest** around a track, and does not produce **the fastest lap time** is irrelevant. The same could be said of many Porsches, in fact could be said of 99.99% of the cars in existence.

So let's settle the issue once and for all. The RX-8 is slower than some Porsches and some other cars aound a track. OK, sound good? No that's not right. Some Porsches are slower than some some other cars and some RX-8s around a track. How's that, better?

Now with that out of the way...let's get back to the original discussion.

/\ /\ Totally agree with everything he said.

I've driven some Porsche's on tracks here in Europe and hands down for track use the only one I would buy is a 997 GT3 RS over the RX-8. But then again I've had chances to buy one and I keep on sticking with the RX-8. The RX-8 is loads of fun on the track without the $135K+ price tag.

agree. he really cant do no wrong given he did win the car for free.

i said rx8 is a slower car than the 911s stock to stock, thats a fact. if he only cares about lap times, thats all he has to know. you can go on and on about feel, $, drivers, but i really wasnt talking about any of that.

And, with a real rear seat, you can take out more than one cute chick at a time.... I think there is a picture floating around with 4 or 5.....

the rx8 is not doubt a great braking, handling, neutrally-steering vehicle. But if you can afford a gt3, then go for it.

And, limit yourself to one chick at a time....

Now, if you are just getting started on the HPDE stuff, keep the 8. She will take care of you and help you to learn fast. I know mine did. Like I said above, I did very well in my first PCA, it was also my first time in the blue group, and I only got passed by one Porsche. That one cost a lot more than my 8. Every local one for sale down here is 2X+ what I drive.

I don't get this conversation. A new 8 is what? 30k? A new 911 is 75k? News flash, an rx-8 is also slower than an F14, the moon, the speed of light, and whatever else. It's not really apples to apples at more than a 2:1 price difference. You can't sell an Rx8 and straight up buy a 911. And with 45k more dollars, if a 911 couldn't ever beat an Rx8, that would be the saddest story ever. If the Rx8 is competitive with the 911, that's quite impressive.

The truth of the matter is the Rx8 performs well above its price point in everything outside of pure muscle grunt on a track.

Now, personally, I'd sell that car in a heartbeat. It's a pretty-boy collectors item. It's worth more sitting there. You could sell it, buy a used 8 in cherry condition for 15k and pocket the difference. Then, you wouldn't feel bad about beating the hell out of it. Or, you could sell it, buy a 911 and pay the difference out of pocket. And with the swing in funds, you may have yourself a slightly better car. Either way, I'd sell that car.

I would also say that with that kinda pocket change you could swing some crazy upgrades. I personally don't care if it is a Foose car, If you've got 45k just laying around to throw at a car, 20b that thing.

my reason for pointing to my track vid!
Buy a cherry used pre 09 model--add boost and upgraded suspension (just coilovers)--then you will pass the Caymans, the boxers (even the new one), the oem c5's vettes, the lotus, the older 911's (most of them) and even most of the hpde 996 Porsche cars (owners usually dont drive them 10/10), the oem e 46 bmw's etc. Once you give this car the equal amount of hp the rest have, then you can see the beauty of the chassis, braking and steering in this car. All all with 4 useable seats and 1/2 the price.
Plus you will be easier on tires and brakes than they are.
Good advice--adding FI even makes the car more fun to drive on the street.
