Fire Extinguisher Mount??

What is the best way to mount the fire extinguisher my RX8. I need it for occasional Super Sprints. It needs to be in the passenger footwell and in a position that won't be uncomfortable for the passenger.

Cheers,
Mark E.

The usual means is to mount the extinguisher bracket using the front seat bracket fasteners, like this B-K mount for the Miata:

I don't know if anyone makes one for the '8, but I've made my own from aluminum plate with good results, using the basic idea and cutting, bending etc. to acheive the desired shape and bottle location.

Actually the best place to put a fire extinguisher is right next to your Neon Lights and VTEC Stickers. oh! and they look even cooler next to your NOS bottle and those 400 pound subwoofers!

come on dude, a fire extinguisher? Unless you are at the track all the time, you don't need one! Rice is for Civic's and crap like that, don't disgrace your RX-8!

I disagree.

I don't take my car to the track at all. Having a fire extinguisher is a good idea for any car. My RX-8 is dropped which prolly helped a piece of clothing, or an old blanket not sure but it got caught underneath my car while driving on the highway.

It light up on fire and I had white smoking from the back o my car before I noticed, pulled over and a big wad of oily fabric was on fire like PLUMES of smoke.

I couldn't get it stomped out because of all the oil and **** on the road, had to call the firedepartment almost caught the grass on the side of the highway on fire.

Yeah, having a fire extinguisher could save YOU and YOUR car. A buddy of mine had a stereo installed and the shop did a lousy job. 4 days later his car caught on fire and he didn't have an extinguisher with him....car was totalled.

Yep. Also, having an extinguisher can be helpful for others...gives you a chance to be a good samaritan, if someone else is on fire...good karma!

hmm, this makes me want to go out and get a new extinguisher. Might not be a bad idea in case my new stereo ever fries any wires or anything.

I have just decided to install a 50 gallon water storage unit in my trunk with a hydraulic water hose system.

Just kidding.

Okay. Yes, a Fire Extinguisher does has its uses and can be a life saver. But putting it on an A-Pillar or in the passenger foot well won't help you, it'll just look dumb.

I did a small powerslide in my miata with my friend in the car, he almost hit his head on the A-Pillar! If a fire extinguisher was there he would of been seriously hurt! and if you put it down in the foot well... what happens when the car is on fire and you can't reach it?

If i were you'd i'd place it somewhere accessable and out of sight (people steal those things sometimes) I suggest underneath your seat or behind it. and maybe put a second one next to your tire kit in the trunk.

As stated above, it is required equipment for some HPDE events.

From http://www.porschenet.com/index.php?...d=53&Itemid=47

NER requires a 2.5-lb. charge (minimum) class BC or ABC fire extinguisher at Driver Education events. Extinguishers with metal nozzles preferred. They must be held by a metal bracket (no plastic straps or brackets, no sheet metal or self tapping screws allowed); must be secured by at least two bolts and nuts to a metal mounting point (chassis, seat rail, roll cage, etc.); and must be reachable from the driver's seat.

I was going to recommend the same, should be able to adapt it easily to the RX-8

Hi,

Yes, the fire extinguisher is for the race track. And for your information MichaelBrown if you want to compete in SuperSprints you must have one fitted within the cabin.

Update.

I had a local motorsport workshop make a bracket for me. It was pretty simple, just a strip of aluminium that using the bolts that attach the passenger seat to the floor of the car. The fire extinguisher already came with a bracket so that bolts to the seat bracket.

I can slide the seat forward to hide the extingusher for day to day use and slide the seat back to make it obvious on track days.

I put mine as it was a requirement for the ice races, but I'm thinking I will keep it in day to day for this very reason. Small chance of helping someone out.. Worth it for me.

Nooooooo... if I wanted an ambulance, that's what I would have bought .. in case someone catches fire and I'm nearby, I'd just spray them windshield washer fluid.. I never use that stuff anyway

^ most washer fluid contains methanol. i'm not sure but i think it might be flammable. it also destroys your paint

Here's what I used to satisfy Porsche Club requirements for their HPDEs. The seat (pulled back for these pics) when in normal position covers the unit mostly and I do feel safer having it in the car for normal driving.

The black bracket I fabricated to fit the strange seat mounting bolt positions and just attached the mount that came with the unit to it.

Go with a 2.5 pound fire extinguisher and they come with a vehicle mounting bracket. I recommend chrome because they look awesome and I got mine here:
