The DSP thread!

Seeing as the Rx8 has been re-classified to DSP for 2013 I thought it was appropriate to start a thread for all setup, tuning, rules & modifications etc.

I am going to be making the change to DSP mainly due to the fact that I have a Mazdaspeed replica kit which I would have to remove for STX rules however all I need to remove to be legal in DSP is the wing which is 4 bolts :-)

EDIT: I have created a 15 page easy to read rules on my website http://www.mazdarx8.org/scca-autocross-car-class-rules/ if you want to download them. It is the extracted content from the official rules.

It went through!? Awesome. I was planning on making the jump from SXT to BSP for next year. The BSP competition in my club is really tough though. The DSP isn't quite so tough. That makes me happy.

My Racing Beat mid pipe has been sitting on my tool box looking lonely all year. That and I feel the Falken street tires are holding me back.

That seems like a really good deal at $330 for the set of used racers. Where did you find that?

Edit: Any idea when the 2013 Solo rulebook will be available for download?

I don't think those Continentals are DSP legal as they are not a DOT-approved tire. I have a set for playing around on the track, and they're pretty good for that and ridiculously cheap as you mentioned. They're much slower than A6's though, so it's unlikely that anybody will care at a local level.

Slicks aren't legal in Street Prepared. You have to use DOT stamped tires.

As already mentioned, people are unlikely to care at the regional level, but you probably won't get through tech at a divisional or national event.

There is a lot of misinformation in the first post of this thread. I would suggest deleting the first post, reading the rule book, and then starting a new thread to avoid confusing those new to the sport. No offense intended.

Fixed:

Although not legal. Top tip for cheap tires is to buy the used Grand Am Continental tires (actually hoosiers). I have not used them yet but at $330 shipped for a set they are great value with 3-4 heat cycles and loads of tread left ~75%.

I really don't think they will compare to Hoosier A6's but they will do for me locally and Maybe I will buy a set of Hoosiers A6 for National events. A quick search will find lots of results for 17" & 18" widths from 225 to 285.

Street Prepared requires the use of DOT approved tires

SCCA Solo I & II Street Prepared Classification Rules:
I was looking at that to for a while till I saw the date. 2003. Not sure how relevant that is anymore. I dont know for sure, I haven't done any comparisons but I'd rather not risk it. Not that it matters much for CART anyway. I just wanna be correct for my own piece of mind.

As of now I'm going by the 2012 SCCA rulebook I downloaded as a PDF from the SCCA website.

good call on that one, completely didn't bother to look at the date lol. I haven't run any issues, then again the only reason i am in SP is cause of the midpipe lol.

OK to make this a more useful thread I have created a pdf of the 2012 Street prepared rules (and all other classes) and added it to my website so everyone can download it. I will update it when the 2013 rules are published.

You are still overlooking the fact that the Mazdaspeed front bumper and side skirts are not legal in DSP.

Link to the official rule book:
The Sports Car Club of America - Solo

Street Prepared rules start on page 91, but you also need to read and understand the Stock Class rules as well as any clarifications in Appendix F. Allowed bodywork modifications are outlined in section 15.2 beginning on page 93. There is a clarification in Appendix F, page 271, which specifically explains that aftermarket bumper covers (i.e. Mazdaspeed) are not permitted.

Iduno. It seems theres some grey area. According the rules, this is how its worded:

15.2 Bodywork - I. Spoilers/splitters and cosmetic trim pieces are permitted. Side skirts may not be used. Spoilers/splitters must comply with the following
subsections. The intent of this allowance is to accommodate commonly available appearance kits, and replicas thereof, which have no significant aerodynamic function at Solo speeds.

It seems that the bumper is ok but the side skirts are not...

Thats the rule I was looking at and took that as the Mazdaspeed front bumper is allowed. I do not have the side skirts so that is not an issue.

Did you look at the clarification in appendix F? I'll make it easy for you.
BUMPER UNITS
The allowances of 15.2.I do not currently permit a replacement nonstandard
front bumper/spoiler integral front fascia unit.
Let's step back and start this again with the right information so this thread become a valued resource instead of a joke.

In classic n00b let's reinvent the wheel and make everyone type in the same stuff all over again forum style there was already a DSP thread. I'd recommend just dumping this one and going there instead:

https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-racing-25/rx-8-dsp-160070/

i already went thru the whole upgrade rules there one by one about a month or two ago, sheesh ...

Or at a minimum you could have at least done the proper legwork and copied all the appropriate links over here rather than start a tee-hee-hee discussion. Before you go getting all defensive, if nobody points out the obvious then the same crap just keeps happening again and again. Although for some people this will still go in one ear/eye and out the clueless other ....

Initially I intend to stick with STX and battle it out with the BRZ/FRS crowd. If I can get all four shocks to stay working properly all the time it should be possible to stay in the hunt. Koni NA is going to be servicing them from now on and they have committed to making sure they are done right ....

That's my plan as well, I just wish I could run in a class and not have to take my look good parts off to run in..

I should be taking the car to Mazda within the next few weeks and hopefully can get a new engine under warranty. Not only does it feel down on power, but the car smokes white smoke like crazy until the engine is up to temp, If I start the car and just leave it idling, it smokes up the whole yard...

My apologies to all. The thread Teamrx8 created was about the move to DSP my intention here was to set up a thread to talk about tuning the Rx8 for DSP. I have misread other peoples posts saying that the Mazdaspeed kit was allowed, obviously you cannot believe everything you read.
Thanks to Broda and Ihitcones for clarifying that the Mazdaspeed kit is illegal, I guess I will either have to risk being protested or run in SM with a NA motor.

Congrats Paimon. You looked good out there. I personally hated the course. I got so frustrated after my 3rd failed attempt, that I quit for the day. Although my second run shows as just +1, I was lost for that one too but the worker didn't even know it I guess.

Thanks bud. Confidence level sure is rising with each race...can't wait for the next one. And yea that course was a bitch, one of those "oh this isn't too bad" when you walk it.. then a whole different story during the race.

My first run (video is on my youtube channel lol), I got stupid lost. Like angry lost I slowed down and I could hear everyone yelling "KEEP GOING!" lolol.

The guy in the white GTI took the cake in DSP by about 5 seconds, but after chatting with him he had a good head on his shoulders. 6th year driver, well modded GTI, and nice wide Hankook slicks :/

I took the Florida State Championships in my Rx8 this weekend and had a blast. The results are still not out but I came 12th in PAX.
I also took a Run in Teddies STX car because STX was a super competitive class with 3 National champions in it.
