Hey Guys/Gals,

Figured I would share my experience using the CG-Lock restraint system in my RX-8 during the last two Solo II events of the season. I have to say that I was pretty amazed at how well it worked. Very simple to attach and take off of the seat belt clip. It really turns the stock 3pt seat belts into a good all around 'keep you planted' system.

Of course, it will never compare to a good 4pt or 5pt system, but for the money it's darn well worth it. Especially if you want to keep your stock front seats.

Absolutely true. Stops the auto adj feature of (only) the seat belt part of the restraint system. SpeedRacer turned me on to this. I wouldn't go on the track or autocross without it now. No more hanging on to the steering wheel to stay planted, no more constant re-adjusting in my seat to stay in place.

I vote this for "most effective cheap mod"!

This is a little off topic...

The most unrealistic thing about car chases in movies is not the wild special effects but the fact that the hot shot hollywood stars almost never where their seatbelts during the chases. I'm like "How the hell is he staying in his seat after doing 180s and 360s.

It just sort of irritates me when I watch (along with the outrageous special effects).

Anyway, sounds like a great product. I will be getting one.

Yup, it only locks the lap portion of the 3pt system to keep you from sliding around in the seat. It keeps the freedom in the shoulder portion there so you can still lean forward and whatnot. I find that very useful in Solo II since the A-Pillar gives you a small front blind spot which I find I have to lean forward to look past sometimes.

Just an aside. Unless they've come up w/a solution, when you order, make sure to put a note for them to send the one with a curved clamp. And it needs to mount in reverse (from what the directions say) due to the 8s belt design. It's no big deal, but the regular straight one just does not fit.

When I bought mine a couple months ago I also emailed the owner and told him it's for an RX-8. Very good people there and helpful to get it right. That's good because these types of forums can ruin a busniess's rep with the enthusiest world.

Oh yeah, you have to mount it reverse like Spin9k said. Looks a little funky, but with this item it's performance first, appearance 2nd.

At my first (and to this point only) autocross, a friend told me to twist the seatbelt buckle 5 or 6 times so it stays tight. Sounds like that is pretty much the same thing only more elegant a solution. Is there another advantage?

Aside from the fact that twisting the seatbelt can cause it to get all kinked up in the retraction rollers inside the b pillar, there really isn't any other advantage other than being comfortable.. i know that you can feel when your seatbelt is twisted and personally, it bugs the heck out of me.. hehe.. but if you like it, go for it! I'll stick with the CG-Lock

All good feedback and all, but what about the advertised statement about lowering your lap times?

Well, the less you have to worry about holding onto the steering wheel for dear life the more you can focus on driving.. i think that's what the lap times statement was meant for

functionally, how is this different than the child seat belt clip?

I don't know since I've never seen a child seat belt clip. I think they both work on the same principle though, using friction to keep the lap portion of the seat belt tight.

it's a little piece of metal - very cheap at most retail places (Target, WalMart, etc)

Ah, got it.. Yeah, that works ont he same priniciple. Try it out on the front seat belt to see how it works and let us know!

Sure thing - I'll bring a clip with me next go-around thru the twisties However, I'd not be approaching near the g-forces from a track day...maybe I should do a track day then?

I have thought about the CG Lock but I've had harnesses in prior cars and like my upper body restrained also.

My poor man's harness: Move the seat all the way back, tighten the seat belt and give it a quick tug to lock it, and then move the seat forward until breathing becomes difficult. My upper and lower body don't move at all. I have the power driver's seat and don't know how you would accomplish this without it.

I have manual seats and do basically the same thing. Lower the seat fully. Move the seat all the way back and then bring it forward a little bit. Pull the belt as tight as I can and give the belt a tug to lock it. Grab the handle and pull the seat forward as far as I can go. Adjust the seat height as far as I can until my helmet touches the ceiling/window frame. I'm in there good and tight.

My last car had power seats with 3 memory positions, one used for autocross. I'd recline a the seat a bit, pull and lock the belt and then use the "autocross" seat position stored in the memory. The consistency of position was good, but worth the added weight? (not that the extra weight mattered that much in that car)

At the Road Atlanta track day yesterday I did what was suggesed here by adjusting my seat further back than I would use while driving. Then I snugged the belt and gave it a tug to lock it. By moving my seat back to the driving position I was pinned in the driver's seat and stayed that way for the full 30 minute sessions. It felt very good to use the steering wheel to control the car rather than to control me.

I tried that technique in my 05 rx8 with manual seats and could not get the belt to lock????

In case I need to get this clip, does the cheap child car seat clips work just as good as this CG Lock???
