our FX16 popped our upper radiator hose very early on Sat morning; the water flashed out so quickly that the temp guage never changed. as a result, we blew our head gasket between the 3 and 4 cylinders. no one could get us an HG before Sunday afternoon, so we tried a pour-in solution (Blue Devil) that a few peolpe recommended. it worked for about an hour. when we got the head off, we found out that the combustion gases had eaten away at the head at the spot where the gasket blew, so we had a notch in the head. not being able to find aluminum welding rod, we JB Weld'd it, and installed a new HG a friend of one of our drivers had brought with him down from NC. we got the car up and running again just in time for the sunday afternoon session, but when we refilled the water, we had a leak from a flange on the side of the head. When we tried tightening it, one of the bolts sheared off.
we then put the car on the trailer and opened some beers. one of our guys described it as "20 hours of car fixing, 10 hours of beer drinking, 1 hour of racing." i did get to take a stint (the end of the day Sat) in our team's Audi, though. that was fun, although it took a while to get used to the car.
looking forward to NL.
wait...are you one of the guys i was talking to Sat night while i was on my laptop in the judging area?

We were not quite as bedeviled as you but our car overheated about 1 hour into the race because we didn't adequately burp the cooling system after we switched radiator hoses, turned out the coolant wasn't full. Then when I got in for my first run the car was intermittently dying on me coming out of turns, its lucky I didn't get rearended. My crew kept thinking "why does he slow down like that, what's with the schizophrenic driving?" That turned out to be due to a plastic decal that somehow found its way into our fuel cell and clogged the pickup. After we got that straightened out the car ran pretty good except that 2nd was hard to downshift into and not really worth it unless the traffic backe way up, so I ran mostly in 3rd gear which meant I was slow coming off the corners but I was able to make up a lot with braking. The Carbotech XP10/XP8 combo allowed us to go much deeper than 9 out of 10 cars. Alas about 3 hours from the end the connecting rod bearing went and the oil pressure dropped and we called it a a day.

Scott we are on for Nelson Ledges Ohio on Oct 3-4, 24 hours with night driving We may need crew for Ohio as it has begun to dawn on us that it takes 4 people to do a driver change and fuel stop and somebody's gotta take a nap some time. Scott, do you want to come to Ohio?
