-do a illustrated concept in photoshop
-Mock up some apoxie to capture the correct surface that Im using
-document where exactly the surface has been taken from(dimensions from existing landmark features on the hood)
-scan that surface in(digitally recreate it)
-desgin and model up a form using scan as reference data
-refine, refine,refine
-save off appropriate files
-print 3d models
-create templates on hood based off reference photos(previous measurements taken)
-cut out holes for the vents
-dry fit, and refine holes
-finish, sand and prep vents for paint
-dry fit again
-paint
-dry fit again
-insert and apoxie in place
Id say this particular job too about 3-4 to capture and scan the data, about 5 hours to model(vent went fast mesh was a long tedeous process), a couple hours to print, 3-4 hours to prep and sand, a couple hours to cut out holes, and a few more to install. right under the 20hr mark from conception to finish(over the course of a couple week period)
Wow...nuf said...very impressive.

Cheers!

maybe, we'll see over the course of the build it may evolve(thats just how things happen when going from 2D to 3D) this design however is a call back to the FD FEED renders, but sculpted a little more

^^^ yes, that's very close to what I will be doing, there is an aftermarket S2K fender that is designed the same as well. pretty much what I'm debating is the height at which I make the upper cut where I have, or at the top of the radius like the IMSA RX7 fender or somewhere in between.
here's different designs I played with a while back... Teh extra vents help to excavate the air that may get captured if I don't use the top of the wheel well as the starting point for the under cut.

the last one for sure out of the 4. it accents the rear vent real well.

elaborate on the "rear vent" are you talking about the upper portion of the front fender?

Hope you don't mind, I made some subtle changes to the front vent...

I think the front vent should flow smoothly into the body and I like the taller vent. I also slightly curved up the top of the vent towards the top of the wheel arch.

Here's a rough photoshop...

BTW I really like that little rear vent, it flows nicely.

personally i think the vent should start at the fender liner level. Cause it flows alot better with the line the car has that runs all the way to the back making it look more aggressive.

The front fender top vent looks good and is a good idea but in combination with the big vent below it i think is overkill.

have you ever heard of 123d catch?
Autodesk 123D - 123D Catch turn photos into 3D models

its a neat online application, you take a series of pictures of anything and send them to these folks they will make a 3d model/scene for you, and it can be imported into 3dstudio max. the best parts its free!

you could use this program to get a 3d model of your rx8 and mold it inside 3dmax and really see what really looks goood!!

I already do that with blue prints,,,
There are several photo based 3d capturing tools out there and most of them dont require you sending your files off to a technician.
All of them Ive see aren't very accurate and I really don't need to do that since I have access to 3d scanning equipment at work
I will be scanning in my FD in the next month so I can get mounting points for this body kit, which Im building.
This is actually an older render, there is a little more aggressiveness built into the design now. I just haven't rendered it out yet

I always entertained the idea of that front fender style on the RX8. I hope you go through with it!

not really...
still have the fiber glass OEM fenders sitting in the basement ready for modding, sitting next to the Panspeed rear over fenders.

been working on the FD project.
Will be scanning in an entire FD in two weeks, so I've been prepping for that...
so this is what that body will look like, this is its final iteration with the exception of the headlight housings(currently working on now)
