that second video is scary...if you think about it...without the right body kit to keep the air from under your car at 230MPH you are going over double the speed of a Cessna at take off and with 600 less LBS! (Cessna is, loaded at 3,600 lbs....that car probably less than 3000lbs since much of the guts have been stripped out)

The sound on the second clip is weird in terms of the motor. I can only imagine what kind of mods that thing had.

1993 Racing Beat land speed record 3rd gen RX-7 driven by Racing Beat founded and owner, Jim Mederer. 800+ hp from a 3 rotor, 3 turbo peripheral port engine. The rules for that year in that class did not allow spoilers. They added some weight inside the car in the form of sandbags to help keep the car down a little better. It didn't work. The car got squirrely at somewhere between 210-220 mph. Thank god for full roll cages. 2 years later in 1995 with the car rebuilt and about 100 more hp, they returned to the salt flats with the car repainted in black with the Japanese and American flags crossing each other as emblems painted on. The theme of the car was "back in black". After the crash, rules were changed to allow some aerodynamic improvements to be made. The car set it's land speed record that year. The course was a little wet and the condition of the salt was terrible. The record fell and the car wasn't even at full throttle! They were guessing that it could top 270 mph but that was never proven. Just some cool history for you guys!

The sound of the engine doesn't sound weird to me. For a little while you can hear a different car in the background somewhere. After it flips it goes back to idle. At idle, peripheral ports lope quite a bit due to the high port overlap. I think it sounds beautiful before it wrecks.
