I have received the first price quote from www.think3d.biz who supplied the following price quote:

"Thanks for your inquiry about producing the RX8 emblem.
My pricing is on the Info page at http://think3d.biz in your case $40.00 each plus $200.00 CND Set-up. If I'm the low bidder then I'd be able to deliver the first 100 in 8 to 12 weeks.

Regards, Tom"

Guys and Gals, take a look at each of the companies who offer sample pics, pricing and additional info and let us know what you think. I will provide the feedback info once I have received it.

Cheers!

I agree, Think 3d looks good, and check out how complicated they're first emblem looks.

BTW would it be 80 bucks total? one for front and one for rear?

RX8PUSHER-

That's awesome, good job doing the leg work. Will any of these vendors create a sample/mockup before we commit to place the order?

Also, I noticed that think3d is located in British Columbia, is the quoted price of $80/each in USD or CAN? If it's $80 CAN, the conversion is in our favor, about $63 USD. Is this $80 per emblem or $80 per set (front and back)?

Regards,
Ra

Update from Rick's
Ra,

The design is certainly doable, but if the curvature of the body is too extreme, getting the badge to lie flat will be a problem. The shape does help a bit. The S2000 can be a good example, since the body curvature is no problem. In fact, I can send a few spare S2000 badges for you to try mounting on the Mazda. If they work, all is ok.

Basically the unit costs of the badges can range anywhere from about $15 -30 per badge or perhaps less, again depending on quantity and complexity of the final art. It pays to order larger quantities, since the cost differential tends to be quite small.

The raised appearance can be captured, but only to a degree, since the badges are molded in a plastic composite that's not very thick.

Once you have final art, dimensions, and indications of the color breaks you want, we can obtain precise estimates that will hold through production.

Rick

Guys & Gals,
I have been in contact with Tom again at 3D, he provided the following info:

"Thanks for the confidence you have about my pricing. The price breakdown is $88.00 dollars CDN ($70.00 USD) for a pair of emblems (Setup fee factored in plus shipping and 2.9% if you use PayPal). I'm a very small operation just my wife and I so that timing is a big factor, I'd need 1 week to make the master, the casting will probably take 2-3 weeks and the plating
4-6 weeks then applying the 2-way tape another week. That is if every thing runs smoothly.

I like your design but it needs a small (1/32") vertical edge where the slope ends so that there are no ragged edges. I trust that the peaks are all level and that the slopes vary, this is tricky but isn't a problem. The plating is the same as with all plastic emblems, done at a local firm - more info at http://www.cvvacuumplaters.com

By all means include me in your bid evaluation.

Regards,
Tom"

I replied and asked for the ability for him do produce a sample of the emblem for review....of course there will be a fee associated. I also provided him a pic of the OEM Mazda Corp emblem to clarify the beveled edge that we desire.

More to follow as I receive it. I have still not received feedback from the other vendors.

Cheers!

3D supplied the following additional info:

RX8 Pusher,

I'm sorry if I've confused you regarding the bevel. Let me explain, if the peak is the same height all over but the footprint varies then the angle of the bevel changes steeper and flatter. But if the peak or ridge varies then the bevel can stay more or less the same. I'll have a close look at the Mazda emblem tomorrow.

I would have made a sample anyways, with the amount of money you'll be spending it's important that we get it right.
We could save time if the prototype is unplated and I'll send you a small emblem that is plated as a sample.
If you require a fully finished sample this could take 4-5 weeks.
I'll send you a 3D image showing various angles before I start cutting but it's never the same as holding it in your hand. If you want to make changes to the unplated sample then not too much time or money is lost.

I'd also like to stagger the shipments so I can do about 26 at a time this is easier than making 100 together.

Regards, Tom
Ok folks, it is getting closer to decision time. I think we have the final design; next step is who we are going to have fab the emblems. We need folks to commit to 100 units total if we go with 3D. There may be folks who want 2 (front & rear) or just 1, then there will be some folks who want more. As long as we get people to commit to a total of 100 we are in business. I am not sure the best way to go about calculating the folks that are committed; voting buttons or a running post of those interested, or e-mail your interest to a single club member. I am open to suggestions, but we still have to decide on who to go with first.

Like the provided e-mail states, 3d will provide an example. Obviously, not everyone can put their hands on it, but we can mail it around for a week or so if that is what is required for you to commit to the emblem.

I have placed the design pic here again folk folks who are just joining the thread. Enjoy!

I like it, but I think the top part of the 8 should be closed off a bit more.....extend the top, and angle up the bottom part of the top half of the 8.

I have a problem with the "8." It's similar to the "8" in the official RX-8 badge, but far from an exact match.

I recommend either getting it exact, or coming up with an "8" that's entirely different. Otherwise, the emblem just won't look right.

Raz,
Do you have anymore design magic that you can do to fix the 8 to be an exact copy of the Mazda’s 8 on the back?

Why don't we start an interest list and everyone can post next to their name how many they would like.

I have read so much in this thread I forgot the answer to this question so I will ask.

Is this going to "replace" or be "in addition to" the badges already on the car?

It is supposed to replace the "Flying M" on the front and rear.

As far as starting the interest list, I'd hold off until we have designs finalized, and vendor chosen, and prices set. If that's okay with everyone, I think it will spare the confusion. I imagine we start a brand new thread.

I see we are doing pretty good here with the local manufacturers, and I like it that way too. I'm still going to ask in Colombia about this, send me the information we gather here regarding size, etc..., and I'll make sure to quote some vendors there as well. In any case, I can say right now that once I know the price I'd probably buy 2 or so, . I'm pretty sure we'll manage to fint 100, even more, the logo is just awsome.

only thing I can think of, would be to make the outside edge a little wider for properly covering holes, but I could be wrong

Yeah your right the wider the more agressive looking, as well as fitting the holes.

Just me and my 2 pennies... I know of a place: www.motorheadjewelry.com that CAN do it, I'm going to write to them and submit a copy of Raz' artwork and see what they say. You're all welcome to do the same and see what kind of response we get.
