Shinka213 have I seen you around? I saw what looked like a black rx8 on 95 south - below the airport. Coulda been a shinka though, its hard to see for sure when the sun's in your eyes at 6 in the afternoon.

Rick at the S2000 forum, made the "S" emblems for their cars. And it is very popular among that circle. www.ricks2k.com is his commercial site, and me makes other custom accessories for the S. I noticed that he's starting to venture out to other models, but all Honda family. I'm wondering if he'd be willing to do something like this.

RX8MAN04- What's the update on getting these cnc machined? Is this idea still feesible?

cool idea, if someone comes up with a good cad print i can cnc machine it in my shop. i have done a couple of projects washer fluid cap oil and brake and radiator .

For all of you who are too lazy to read through the whole thread :p , or seem to have lost which page it was originally on, here's the design that Raz came up with:

Next step is pitching this to someone who can produce these kinds of stuff.

I mentioned Ricks, and RX8MAN04 may also be able to do this. Does anyone else have any ideas/suggestions? Ah...beautiful isn't it? Raz, you're awesome!

PS...your design is awesome.....how did you craft it? via computer or free hand?
PSS...I hope we can find someone that can machine it

Ok, I sent an email to Rick's, hopefully I'll hear back soon.

Does anyone know if the Miata or RX-7 clubs did anything similar?

it was like the second exit after the airport, I was on 95 south, about a week ago I think - i forget which day, around 6-6:30 pm. I saw the 8 going northbound.

I have a sunlight silver if you saw me.

The design was done using Illustrator to craft a vector based version, then extruded and rendered in 3D max.

darn, that sounds complicated.....can you give me that in layman's terms?
what area of the burbs do you live in?

Laymen's terms - I took the first photoshopped design I made, and using a program called Adobe Illustrator, I traced around the edges with the pen tool to create a version of the logo that is defined by mathematical equations rather than a raster of pixels with assigned RGB values. This is known as vector artwork, and is known this way because the lines are basically derived from formulas, and will change shape depending on where you put your vertices - (control points.) Say you wanted to make a circle. You make 4 points like a square, only you have handles on each point that you pull out at a 45 degree angle to the sides of the square. These handles act like magnets, and bow out the sides of the square until it becomes a circle. Thus a circle, no matter how large or small can be defined by 4 control points with handles. These shapes, made of points connected by lines that are shaped by mathematical equations are known collectively as vector-based artwork.

Once I had the shape fine-tuned and smooth all the way around, I then imported it into a 3D program known as 3D studio max. In this program, I was able to take the flat vector based image, and pull it out into the third dimension. In 3D programs, vector based artwork is taken to the next level by the addition of a Z axis, or depth, into those same mathematical equations. I took my basic vector shapes (see above for explaination of what vector shapes are) - these shapes are refered to as splines. I then extruded them - added Z-depth to them. They were now kind of like boxes - imagine if you take a circle and pull it in Z depth it becomes a cylinder, which is a round box made from a circle if you take my analogy. Then if you shrink the top to virtually a single point, it becomes a cone. This is refered to as beveling. the edges of your kitchen counter are probably beveled, a picture frame is beveled, you get the idea.

Finally, I assigned textures to the surface of the now 3-dimensional vector-based artwork, known as a 3D model. The texture I assigned was designed to give the effect of an almost mirror like finish, like polished metal or chrome. Now I had to give it something to reflect, so i threw some random colored brownish and bluish squares all around the model, created a pretend camera to look through, aimed at the model, and set up a camera lens depth of field effect to blur the background. I clicked the render button, and 12 passes and 2 minutes later, had that rasterized jpg image ready to upload.

I hope that's layman enough for you. For more information on Adobe Illustrator and 3D studio max, you can check out www.adobe.com and www.discreet.com -only the new versions of 3D studio max are called Autodesk 3ds max I belive - I'm still using version 5 at work and 6 at home.

And home is Upper Darby - near the 69th St. Station.

WOW!!!!!, RazOrama your logo is just flawless, congratulations!!! If you guys make it please let me know and I'll buy. One more thing, I'm Colombian, and EVERYTHING is cheaper there, so if we get the data I could ask for prices in one of my trips there, I'd say it wouldn't be more than $5 to $10 each, but I have to ask. PM me if interested

Oh! one last thing... sorry... I'm flying there next week for 10 days, just in case we want to do that in this trip. Anyway, if not it's ok, I have to travel once every 6 weeks. Ah, and I can get them to miami for free (Company mail) so shipping would be only form Miami only.

Maurovella,

Most definately, and I think Raz will agree, if you want to take the file and shop around, that would be awesome. I think the emblem should be the same material as the "Flying M", which is plastic of some sort, if possible (please correct me if I'm wrong). If not, machined metal seems to be the easiest to produce.

However, I don't think we've determined if this will cover the existing holes yet.

Hey guys, many of you have inquired me about the availability of the badge -- and here is the info. I can make the badge (rotor w/ 8 in it), however, it will NOT be beveled, and it will be flat... like the other badges that i'm looking to make. I have to make a template for this, so production will start if you guys are interested.

I still need the DIMENSIONS that you guys want this to be. It will be laser cut from stainless steel, so it will be waterproof, and pretty darn sturdy as it will be 1mm of SS thick!!

PM me for interest.

James.

As for the covering holes argument, I'm pretty sure it can be made to cover the holes by either raising or lowering the placement, or at worst making the rotor shape a hair thicker. What is really necessary at this point is finding out the exact curvature of the hood/rear at that point and finding out the feasability of creating a complex shape like that for a relatively limited distribution (this club).

Consider a more generic rotary symbol instead of the "8". Maybe a subtle morph of the 7 & 8. You could then get the 7 owners on board and increase the production runs.

Your design is stunning but my experience says it will cost well over $100 ea for a small production run.

w/o the bezeled look, as i have stated, and w/o holes will cost 15-20 made from laser cut stainless steel.

Razorama - are you an engineer? You certainly sound like one, not that it is a bad thing, I just found myself feeling like I was listening to one of my engineering profs as I was reading through your explicit details for designing an emblem in programs.

I am taking Robotics this summer and learning a little about VRML to simulate robotic arm movements on computers, and next summer I'll be doing a robotics internship.

Reading your post was actually inspiring. It's cool to know I'll be able to use the stuff I learn for hobbies as well as just work. :p

we are not too far from each other....I live in Aston....right off of 95 near meetinghouse rd...
just really a stones throw - do you belong to the RX8 Tristate club?
have you seen my new post? got the OEM package installed the other day...
