Cool No cigar.....

Not even close to the first rotary!

Maybe the first MAZDA version, but perhaps we should step back and see how far Mazda went.... what they got when they bought the license from NSU was a suitcase full of bits. Not even a running model, just an 'idea'.

and Felix was out of the picture-.

Yeah, Felix Wankel.

And the engine DOES look just like a Renesis. The stuff hanging off the front might be different, but the engine is only the little keg like part in the middle of it.

The biggest rotary engine
That's pretty big. The biggest one though was described as having a rotor the size of a dining room table and was large enough for a full size adult to stand in the housing.

The first succesful rotary engines were slightly different than the ones we use now. They were called type kk something and the eccentric shaft was FIXED and the whole housing rotated and the rotor as well, inside another bigger housing. This created less stress on the eccentric and could rev higher than 20,000 rpm. The drawback was that you had to disassemble the engine to change the spark plugs! I believe this is the engine shown in the picture with Felix, look how there is a housing withing a housing. Cool!

And Felix Wankle didn't actually have the idea of the rotary engine in its current "KKM" form. I read a very interesting "history" book about it, and one of his associates came up with the stationary housing and rotors/eccentric shaft KKM design. Felix was really pissed-off, because the new design was not perfectly balanced with true circular motion like his original DKM design. I suppose he eventually came around - the rest is history...

There is a really neat animation of the DKM somewhere (I just spent 1/2 hour looking for it - d'oh). Although not as simple as the KKM, you can see how smooth it would have run.

Cheers,
Hymee.
