You do understand that this is a purpose built drift car...and that just like any purpose built track car, it performs great in it's essence, but won't transfer into another type of racing, right?

What I'm saying is that it's built in the same respect that Grand-Am GT Series cars are built. Stripped, painted, different Engine, different suspension, and reinforced chassis...only difference is that the suspension and tires are set up for drift.

 

I don't consider drifting a form of racing. It's not a race car - its not a street car - it's an entertainment car. Therefore, its "essence" can't transfer to racing. The drivers may have skill, but it's more like American Idol, or the WWF, simply a show for the audience. Personally, as I simply don't 'get' drifting, much like I don't 'get' golf.... I'll stick by my ststement of "it also looks like a waste of a good chassis to do this to a car/engine"

 

It is like the difference between Icedancing and speedskating. One is pretty, the other is fast. I suppose that they are each legitamate in their own way.

ETA: I have to say, that, while one can argue about how 'pretty' a thing is, speed is an objective measure. And I hate icedancing.

 

I consider them different as one has a definitive winner. The other is a judged event where the outcome is decided by the opinion of a human.

i agree that drifting is in no way racing and mostly for entertainment, but who cares? track racing is definitely fun, but be honest w/ yourself for a sec. how much fun is drifting on someone else's dime? people started having fun sliding and someone found a way to make money off people good at sliding around. (same applies to racing in a different sense) both track racing and drifting are hobbies, the only difference is their objectives and the means they get there.

While some people think drifting is just for show.. I think it definitely requires more skill than just going fast on a track. That car sure is sexy!

 

You, of course, base that statement on an elite-level comparison of the two disciplines, correct? Or is it that you have never actually gone fast on a track, but just thought that you were.

 

One could argue it takes as much skill to control a slide as it does to control the car pushing it to the limits from sliding.

Drifting is considered for show since it's not a real race as it's a judge event, not a race format. Drifting isn't the fastest way around a track, but that doesn't mean it's not more fun.

If you want to go sideways and consider it a race, go to dirt tracks where it can actually be the fastest way around the track depending on surface conditions.

 

Have u tried drifting through a track? It takes skill to control the drift where as anyone can go to a track and just go fast with little to no skill as long as you know how to drive. Yes of course those with more skill will get better track times.

 

Watch Tokyo drift if u need to be convinced...

Seriously though, IMO drifting is a form of racing. I can see why most people feel its just for "show" though.

 

This I definitely agree with.. thing is I think most people that track their car don't push it to the limit.. meaning that their lacking skill yet still going fast. Meanwhile to do any form of drifting you require skill.. if that makes sense?

 

I'm not knocking Drifting, in fact I think it would be fun since I come from dirt racing background going sideways around 100mph in the corners

However, you have to stand back and instead of being defensive realize, as long as it's a judged event it's not an actual race. To race means to compete in a timed fashioned to complete a circuit the fastest based on a set of laps. In drifting you're not doing this so per say definition aspect, it is not racing.

Secondly, while more fun, it's counteracting against the concept of racing, which is do complete a circuit within the fastest time possible provided for a class, by doing so through drifting resulting in slower times maybe, with the exception being if you were on an all tight corner track of the sort like in Tokyo Drift.

Lastly, who cares if it's not technically a real race? As long as you still have fun that's all should matter

 

I think you're being defensive about this..no one is stating drifting does not take skill or that it takes less skill; you kinda brought that to a table initiating a debate when no one was even mentioning it.

Coming from a background going sideways on a race track, I know it takes skill to go sideways and mark your line, pass a car doing so, etc.

 

^ I get your point. Sometimes I do come off as defensive since there's so much hate for drifting on here. Not trying to talk down on actual track racing either as I'm a fan of both.
