Easy_E1 BLEW UP at SSXI

Well,, there seems to be a rumor floating around the Double Tree Hotel on Saturday and Sunday, that I blew up my intake manifold. Well it's true.
I was being stupid with the Nitrous on and had an intake backfire (understatement).
Too much load and not enough rpms. So it went BOOM. I was right behind Mazdamaniac and right in front of Charles R. Hill.
Jeff said he looked in the rear view mirror just in time to see flames coming out from all four sides of my hood.
Al I saw were flames coming half way up my windshield. Now the car did not catch on fire, it was a just a giant fireball that went right out. Thank God!

I just want to say that MAZDA owners are some of the greatest people in the world. Within an hour of this happening I had all kinds of help in obtaining a replacement manifold.

I want to thank Glenn at AZ Rotary Rockets for his help. Thank you.

I would like to thank Glenn and Valerie at Finishing Touch Body shop in Fountain Hills AZ. They offered to trailer my car back to AZ if for some reason we couldn't get it going. Glenn and Valerie own the Work in Progress Cosmosport that was in the show line up. They also own the BEST body shop in Arizona.

And I would especially like to thank Monte Mullins who just happened to have a wrecked '04 AT in the parking garage at the hotel. He said "Take what you need to get going".
What a guy!!! Thank you!!

But above all I want to thank my AZ rotary buddies for hanging in there with me and giving me all kinds of **** for what happened. A
And a BIG THANKS to Mazdamaniac for helping me swap out the intake after some time in the bar. We were up and running at about 3:30 Sunday morning. Also thanks to Brian for taking all these wonderful pictures of Jeff, Niki, Jason and myself in the wee hours of the morning.

Thanks to all that helped,, Thank You.

Anyway here are some pics.

awesome - well done on finding the limits for the manifold

Anything you would like to add to warn other owners on "what not to do " ?

I'd suggest not power breaking with the nitrous activated!

Other than that, the experience comes highly recommended!

I was just glad to see the thing scream out of Irvine instead of limp.

Pictures of the explosion or it never happened!

All I can say is ditto, +1 or whateva on this community. Most of us seem to be the type to give a guy the shirts off our own backs if it would help them out. Oh and did MM get a spanking afterward for helping you out?

I just assumed you were trying to replicate Jeff's zooming to the beat of "smack the bitch"

Or at least his Rick-rolling of seven stock

+1. I was actually thinking about this today when I was looking under the hood at the momentus amount of cleaning that needs to happen in there. Why hasn't this been done. It would look a whole lot better, and be stronger. Plastic is never as reliable. I would say especially with boost, a better manifold can only help the car.

Design and cost - hard to mold metal into the same shape you can get with plastic.

No it wouldn't - not without the SC itself.

With FI - you can overcome some of the drama of the loss of airflow characteristics. But 10 PSI is not going to cause your plastic manifold to grenade - a few hundred PSI from a manifold backfire is another story.

Unless someone proves me wrong - I will go out on a limb and say the stock manifold is a hands down winner for this motor as is (including the SSV, APV etc).
