rotary reborn from best motoring

a very marginal dvd (japanese tv show?). but there is a bunch of footage of the rx8 driving with other cars as comparison on a simple autocross, twisty road, and a short racetrack. they also hit the speed limiter on a banked track.

the most interesting was the road course race with a G35 coupe, S2000, rsx type r, WRX, rx8 and a miata. all the fast cars immediately left the miata behind, and every other car eventually passed the rx8- just blew it away on the straight.

the S2000 was first, no surprise there, the G35 second, then the wrx and the integra.

they said the slow corners were under 6K RPM in 2nd, and 3rd was a little too short for the longest straight. the drivers took decent lines and seemed to be competent. the rx8 was a well optioned model, with navigation and leather, but it just lacked scoot on the straight.

This has been discussed a bunch. There's also a rotary revenge video where a MS RX-8 beats the whole field. Most people don't put a lot of stock in the Best Motoring 'races' since they are so inconsistent.

The Rotary Reborn DVD is 2 years old and has been discussed to death. The "revenge" battle is less known, as that DVD was not released with English subtitles. Here's the results of the revenge battle:

順位 車名 ドライバー LAP 1 LAP 2 LAP3 LAP4 LAP5 TOTAL TIME ATTACk

If you really want the revenge battle DVD you need to hunt down the Sept. 2003 issue. Details are here: http://www.bestmotoring.jp/magazine/0309/

If that's the track session with a silver 8 with MS kit, I have that vid too. Pretty freakn sick. The 8 pretty much has it's way the entire race.

the red/white rx8 that they drive in the rotary reborn video is a TypeS "HiPower" model, 6speed manual with the 250hp 6port motor. although it also has the sunroof and leather interior that weighs it down a bit

the silver rx8 they drive in the Rotary Revenge video is the ASpec "Mazdaspeed" model, basicaly the 'Sport' package car with all the mazdaspeed parts on it.

Races are fixers, tuj

They drive so defensively it is unbelievable. The lastest one the 8 can even drive pass a Lexus IS300!

Look at the time attack they do in Tsukuba - they are more consistent times.

The fact that the stock 8 is doing 1"10.8 at Tsukuba and the A spec is doing 1"8.7, you can see how a good brake and suspension can do to your 8.

Gan san use a NR-A model and can only do a 1"10.2 recently. I wonder what they have in the NR-A model, may might not have suspension but only brakes.

Exactly! I saw one where they were racing the RX8 and the guy never hit redline. WHO THE HELL DRIVES A ROTARY POWERED CAR LIKE THAT?

I don't know if thats true, if you look the gearing on the 8 is super long, vs. say the ms8 on the revenge video, the gearing is a lot more shorter. 6 spd has taller gears that the 5spd.

Also on the revenge video the rx8 had advan racing slicks, made the most difference imo.

ehhheehhhhh..... oh dear I have to write although I am very hungry and dinner is ready

The gearing is not shorter. It is the same gear box LOL. It rev faster because of the lighten flywheel.

Both red one and the silver one in the revenge video are 6 speed manual with high power engine. Read your dealer's MazdaSpeed catalogue the A spec has ALL the options in it, including the shocks and springs. It gained 1.5 seconds over stock.

Advan tyre is NOT slicks ... it is not even semi slicks Advan AD07 is sport tyre more like the old Potenza RE010. They are good sports tyre but wears out. Slick tyre operates at much higher temp than these. But I think the Neova is much much better than RE040. I give them 0.5 second. If it is slick I give another 2.5 seconds.

You can buy these Yoko Advan AD07 Neova on tirerack.com, which makes me jealous.

Alternative is importing them, Potenza-01R is also a similar tyres in Japan. www.potenza.jp. Now RE55S there is the semi slick that I use on the track 4.5 sec difference per lap for me!

haha, thanks for the clarifcation. I was always under the assumption that it was 5spd because it got beat pretty badly on the straight even by the type r.

Yea I might pick some ad07 up later down the road when my falkens wear thin.

Yup, what Taka said is true. The gear ratios are the same. In fact the BM reviewers said the gear ratio is the weak point for the RX-8 on the Tsukaba track, which is why it did poorly in the rotary reborn video. Yet the A-spec version could overcome this weakness and win in the revenge battle. The MS suspension, brakes, flywheel and tires made the most difference. The BM guys estimate that the power increase (~5hp) by the exhaust and other minor stuff was negated by the heavier MS body kit. The details are all in the website I posted before: http://www.bestmotoring.jp/magazine/0309/
If you can't read Japanese, use Google or Babelfish to translate it.

And yeah, I'm thinking of getting those Yokohama Advan AD07s too. I believe the Lotus Elise comes with these as the OEM tires. They are super sticky, but I don't think they last long at all.

I hear Neovas aren't as great as the ad on the webpage says it is, but that's me. It's nice to see you posting taka. Yes that's right, I'm alive.

Nice to see you too shelleys man. How are you doing?

Yeah you are not completely wrong shelleys man, there is a trend (more like a popularity contest) that people in Japan are switching to the Poteza RE01Rs. Well when you have Tsuchiya running workshops and tyre test all over Japan, some people will suck in to those.

Tyres are tyres for the road - too expensive to trash them .

I'm fine. Just taking a semi-vacation while I shake this summer cold. I think Yokohama started importing its Neova into the U.S., and the reviews are good, but they're too pricey. When I destroy my RE040s, I might try Hankook. They're relatively new, and what's best is their tires are affordable. I love Korea. :p

Ohh... that hurts. It is like a teacher with a cane going up to the naughty student.

I always have fanasty in the classroom... maybe I watch too much AV from Japan :D

Hankook is not bad Shelleys man. Reasonable price that does the job. Yes the Ventus sports has 225/45 and 245/40 to choose from
