For starters I thought that this was a RX 8 club, not a Corvette club. Who cares how a vette handles. As for the RX I would take it over a vette any day. I mean look at it. Almost anyone I encounter jaw drops at the sight of my car. Here where I live you dont see too many of the 8's driving around. My cousin thought that it was a porche or sumthin exotic. As for the power and handling of the car, I love it. I dont race so its great for me. Plus I dont have the money to floor it because of how high gas is. Plain and simple the RX 8 is one fly car.

Talking Protech RX-8 Turbo in Car and Driver

Car and Driver tests a Protech turbo in the July issue.

390 HP
0-60 in 4.9
1/4 in 13.5
Both are a full second over C&D's test of a standard car.

They say the biggest improvement is throttle response, top gear accleration is drastically improved. 50-70 in top gear is 3.7 seconds quicker than a stock car.

Cost - $5000 for the turbo, $2000 for an engine management system. The test car also had Tein coil overs with electronic damper adj, 275/30/19 wheels and tires, water injection system, and a beefier clutch for an "as tested price" of $45,374.

yup, i posted the entire article in the photos/multimedia section, accidentally in that section.

on ptp's turbo: It's an expensive mod, but worth it if you got the money to burn. I personally would get a used greddy with inter-X... but still waiting to see how axial flow supercharger's gonna be.

Kinda shuts up all those that said the renesis can't be modified...here is a bolt-on that delivers 390hp.

Price will go down eventually. It seems the aftermarket is finally getting the 8's complicated electronics; the Protech car had good driveability, as do Greddy's with the inter-x.

Completely stock otherwise, 'cept a stiffer clutch, and 390 HP...pretty impressive.

Surprised with all those suspension mods that the handling numbers didn't show much better, considering what they said about the **** ride quality from the mods. Maybe stock IS best.

The 0-60 and 1/4 mile time sucks! There must be no power under the curve. Come on 390whp that thing should easily be running 12's! Adrian ran 13.1 with his Greddy kit putting down less than 300.

thats 390 crank hp. not wheel. the problem with this test car was that they could not launch it well.

I've sen a 400 hp RX-7 run a 14 flat because he couldn't get off the line. If you bog off the line, your turbo also has to spool back up. This takes time. Driver has alot to do with it. 390 hp should be low 12's if launched properly and able to get traction.

I don't know, your statement is assuming the magazine only tried once.

if you read the other thread the car was detuned & not putting out 390hp on the test day.

i agree with RG, its all traction + hiting the right launch rpm. that car could easily hit better numbers with more rubber and practice.

can the stock clutch/tranny handle the power? i have a feeling the upgrade is a necessity in the longterm.

the stock clutch was still holding the power but it was slipping a little bit, we had an act clutch kit in our test car.

What's more, I can't understand why anyone who's into straight-line acceleration and quarter-mile times would buy an 8 in the first place. That's like buying a Swiss Army knife and complaining it sucks when you carve a turkey. No one should buy an 8 thinking "Gee, I'd love to have a vette but I can't swing it right now so I'll get this 8 instead and oh look—it has a rotary engine—whatever". You buy the 8 because of the rotary, not despite the fact it has one. The engine defines the car, and the reason it defines the car is because the tiny, little engine makes the rest of the car—its balance, its feel, its handling, its smoothness, its uniqueness, its accomodations—possible. So of course they'll be people who want a faster, FI RX-8 who will have no interest in a vette. Because at the end of the day, it's not just about speed in a straight, boring line.
Damn good post!! Couldn't of said it better.

The 8 is geared for NA. 1st gear is a waste FI...wheelspin problems and lost time on the 1-2 shift.

They should try swapping out the diff gear from the auto RX-8. It is numerically lower. My bet is with a useful 1st gear, the 1/4 mi time will improve substantially.

That's because he's a badass driver!

Also, I had drag radials on and no rear seats/psg seat for weight reduction. If they could master the launch, that car would easily hit 12's.

So true! I ran a 14.1 and a 12.9 in the same day with my FD.

Agree to disagree.

Price of car plus turbo as per article was $33k. Price as tested $43k included various other modifications for prototyping purposes (the car was a prototype).
Wheel and suspension package adds only 0.03g to skidpad number. Not worth it. Besides, dropping ride height only serves to make front airdam more prone to scrapes.

Slalom speeds are more indicative of handling potential than skidpad numbers. Pls quote slalom speeds when arguing about handling.

Biggest benefit to this modification seems to be throttle response and rollon acceleration. But some much needed midrange punch is exactly what will make a great car even greater. Blasting around from 0-60 every 4.9sec is kinda meaningless.

I wonder if they will ever get the PTP electronics to properly interface with Mazda's DSC, ABS, TCS systems.

If kits like this can be sold in decent numbers, costs should come down. I'd spend a few g's on this upgrade.

In same issue of C/D the Vette gets 14 mpg on a 500 mile trip not 28 mpg. It still beat out the GT500, but I could never get a vette. Wifey calls it a ***** car. She'd divorce me. Besides, where would the inlaws/outlaws sit?

I'd spring for the turbo package when my warranty is over. Hopefully, they'd have ironed out some bugs by then......

Did you launch in 2nd gear when you ran that 13.1?
