Things look good for the Rotary
"The automaker, whose name has been synonymous with the rotary engine, said that "the gasoline rotary engine will be substantially upgraded in the early 2010s." Mazda said the next-generation version of the Renesis, or 16X, engine "will offer substantially improved performance and economy through use of direct injection spark ignition and high-speed combustion technology, enfolded in new rotary dimensions."
Mazda did not reveal technical specifications on the new rotary engine. The advanced Renesis engine made its appearance last fall on the Mazda Taiki, a stretched coupe concept car that debuted at the 2007 Tokyo Auto Show. In that version, it was described by the company as the "next-generation rotary engine." Taiki is the fourth concept car in the company's Nagare design lineup."

Mazda has already said as much. 23% larger displacement, 20% lighter weight, direct injection will also increase power somewhat, better low-end torque also.
