Interesting that he said the rotary engine was banned from LeMans series. Maybe Rotarygod can chim in and clarify this.

If I remember correctly, I heard it was banned because of "unfair weight advantages"

Piston engines should be banned because of unfair torque advantages.

 

It wasn't "banned" at all. There was a rule change that limited total engine displacement. When this happened it meant the 4 rotor wouldn't be allowed due to it's size. The smaller engines were within the size regulations and allowed under the rules but weren't powerful enough to be competitive. Many engines, not only rotary, went away as a result. It's a misconception that the rotary was banned.

It is believed that the rules change was specifically aimed at making the rotary noncompetitive though as many people complained about it for various reasons. Due to this it is often just stated that it was "banned". Banned isn't the technically correct term but it was definitely being shown the door.
