It's to build dealer loyalty. If they do a good job on your recall and give you free oil changes, you will be very likely to bring your rx-8 (which they figure will break often) to their dealership every time.

Most of the free oil change offers have a catch, such as you get to pay for a very expensive checkup where they don't do anything necessary every 15k miles. So they make up for the "free" oil changes and then some!

BTW my understanding is that marketing as part of a recall is expressly forbidden by Mazda. You may want to report them.

why on earth would anyone not want a new engine? I'm praying mine gets swapped, that plus all the bodywork it has had over the last 2 years almost equals a new car for me

If somebody has say 10k miles on their car and their engine is running fine, I could see them not wanting somebody doing that major of a procedure. The way I see it, the more steps there are to a repair, the more things could go wrong. I've had a dealer (my last car) forget to tighten the lug nuts of my wheels when they put new tires on. I'm just happy I never had to bring my car in for anything serious.

Yes I absolutely agree with all of the above, I should know I'm on my 2nd reman, and third engine overall. Not happy what so ever, wish my original engine never had any problems.

In addition; I have spent more time fighting with Mazda, and leaving my car at the dealer than I have driving the frigging thing this year!!!!!

I for one would not want a new engine unless there was a real problem with the one I have . Why :
*Time without the car
*existing engine is a known quantity with all the bugs ironed out
*lots of mechanics forget to put half the bolts back in , put things on upside down , back to front or loose.

Tirminyl, are you the first one to get an engine replaced without an observed loss of power? I don't recall reading about anyone else in this thread reporting that.

I am in the same boat as you - had rough idle sometimes, and it almost died maybe twice, never a loss of power. Based on that I thought my motor was probably ok... now, after your report, I'm not so sure.

^ great, mine sometimes gets a slightly 'lumpy' idle (no biggie in my head, my old 13b did that all the time)...

...no power lossage...

...but she's stalled 3 times while idling, immidiately following fillups.. no CEL.

...she's also had about 15 instances where one twist of the key didn't do it. All these were from Day One, in hot weather (like pushing hi-90's), after sitting for a while after a spirited drive. Normally this car starts in 4-5 "ruhs", but about 15 times, it took more like 10-15-20.

Of course, my dip local dealer "could not replicate problem" on any of these a few months ago. I'm not sure the service "advisor" even understood what I was telling him. Maybe I'll have to draw him cute little pictures as visual aids.

I think my motor may be toast, just based on the oddball behaviour..

Then again, it may be just nasty plugs. *shrug*

RevTo9K, missinmahseven- Same issue as you guys. When the car almost died on me (twice now that I remember) it was a day or so after a fill up. Of course with the random low idle to the point of stalling. Rarely when the engine was warm it would take much longer than normal to start. I always have a habit of turning to the "ON" position and waiting before I start the car. I didn't think anything of it as I did not have any powerloss, weird noises, or any other symptoms people experienced. A month before I got my car (Jan 06) new plugs were installed along with battery and starter. I have put 13k miles on it since Feb and it has 27xxx miles total.

I was pretty certain that I wouldn't need a new engine, oh well. Im glad an issue was nipped in the butt.

It seems like the cars that have the problems REALLY have problems that keep repeatedly acting up and causing them to be on multiple replaced engines.

Could a malfunctioning ECU be doing some bad stuff to 'em, perhaps sporadically?

*sniff*

Anywho, I'll go to there tomorrow n take some pictures of the process . Not every day you get to see your engine pulled

According to the recall, everyone is supposed to have a rental available to them. Mazda pays for it, or reimburses the dealer. In this case, the dealer is probably getting the reimbursment charges from Mazda for not providing anything to the customer. This is a way to get more $$ from Mazda to offset any losses on time lost for the recall.

Does this qualify as a reason to call MNAO and let them know you did NOT get the white glove treatment? I know I'd call if I didn't get things that were promised in the recall. If they're doing it to you, they're probably doing it to others too.

They are going to give me a Crossfire rental when I get my car checked out.

I called to reserve it ahead of time.

If you see a menacing, black Crossfire in your rear view mirror, and it flashes its brights indicating it has a burning hunger to pass you, that'd be me listening to 'Radar Love' in my Crossfire!

Can I point and laugh as you drive by into the radar trap that's waiting for you just up the road?

Wow.... just when I thought my resale value could not suck any worse? Giving only a 1 year extension and 10k miles goes to show you how much confidence Mazda has that this engine is going to last.

Anyone know the name of Mazda's rental program. I can't remember what it is, and want to be sure I know it when I have to deal w/the recall.
