Mazda Design Head Speaks on Next RX-7
As reported by Autocar:
(I added the boldface.)
Mazda wants to make sportier cars and a new RX-7 is on the drawing board, the company's new design boss has revealed to Autocar. Speaking on the eve of tomorrow's Tokyo motor show, Ikuo Maeda told Autocar that he has done sketches of an RX7 replacement and is keen to push through a new two-seater sports car.
"We really want to have an RX-7 and if the market allows us to build it we will have it ready," he said. Maeda gave strong hints that he is currently pursuading other senior Mazda bosses to give the new sports car the green light. Maeda also revealed that a new RX-7 would be a two-seater and would likely be powered by a rotary engine, like all of its predecessors. Maeda also wants to rejuvinate the entire Mazda line-up, and is focusing on attracting "enthusiastic" customers and pushing the brand upmarket by addressing the quality of the company's interiors.
The first fruits of the Maeda's thinking is likely to be seen in a concept car shown next year.

Momentum Keeps Me Going
Wake me up when Mazda thinks the 'market will let us' and this new guy's boss say 'ok green light' I've my doubts Mazda will actually be giving us anything to buy before nearly every other creditable manufacturer has had a go.... and some are introing the next round of new ones right now.

The Michigan "WANKEL"
I was actually shocked when I read this yesterday. I thought this project was a lot farther along than this. I thought the PRODUCTION car was due out by then. It makes me wonder if there might be truth to the rumors that state there will be a new RX-8 with the new 1.6L engine, and also a new RX-7 with this engine, coming several years later.
Either way, I'm glad I didn't wait for this mythical beast to arrive, and bought my 09 RX-8. I've always loved the RX-8, and it's a blast to drive. I'm sure that if a 1.6L powered car ever makes it to production, I'll be jealous of the engine, but I'll continue to love my RX-8. Maybe around that time I'll be looking for an engine swap, anyway!

Huge hole is huge
They have stated that they will keep the design of the 8 with it's 4 doors....so that makes me think that the 2 seater 7 + the 8 will be released.
Yay, more speculation lol.

Seriously...hahaha. But, do you think Mazda would release two rotary cars? a 2 seater 7 and the "4 door" 8?

The new Rx7 is on hiatus. the new rotary will be a revolution of the Rx8, a small 4 door coupe design. they said on motorauthority.com that the 16x's performance was matching their expectations, however that doesn't mean that a new 7 won't reappear. New Rx8 in 2012.

Imagine the MS3 Turbo engine in a lightweight Kabura ...what I can't understand is why doesn't Mazda jump on this...esp considering what's happening with the 16X? Mazda pinning it's halo car future on only rotary engine vehicles is a rather chancy thing.

An MX-7 would be interesting, but would also be waving a white flag on the rotary.
