I HIGHLY disagree with this statement. Paying for a car in no shape form or fashison makes you respectable. Nor does it build necessarily build character. How you handle yourself in stressful situations is what builds character. If he drives the car in a responsible way then that's all he needs to do. Why do people lambast people who are fortunate enough to have family that are willing to buy things for their children and loved ones. There is nothing from the posts that VelociRedBeast have submitted that suggest he has no character or has not acted in a respectible manner.

You are totally right there is no comparison at all, besides the fact that they are materal objects that can be done with as the onwer wishes. If I give you something it is yours.

Materialistic? Please. A kid who begs mommy and daddy for a 30k car instead of a 15k Civic. Now... who is being materialistic? And yes, I believe someone is respectible for paying for their own car. Does that make them a respectable person as a whole? No.

For example a mean person can do a nice thing. Does that make him a nice person overall? No.

I was speaking generally in my previous statements.

Anyway, the kid could have gained a lot of character by telling Mom and Dad to get themselves a nice car instead of getting one for him. I personally would never accept an expensive car from my parents. I'd do the opposite.

Hey, maybe his parent's are loaded. Maybe they already have a really nice car of their own. Big deal. Granted, my first cars were piles of crap, but that doesn't mean I'm going to put down some kid who is lucky enough to have an 8.

You are wrong. We do have a few people who get a little snippy and crabby, and sometimes they even insult other members. It's just a smaller version of the real world.

On a different note, there are also a lot of really nice folks here too. So welcome to the club.

Thank you! But this has to be the meanest thread I have seen here. I dont want to reply too much just so it will go away. If I saw this thread when I first joined, I may not have joined! But I am glad I did, it is very informative, and 1 horrible posting compared to hundred great ones isnt too bad....

Pretty freakin' immature, guys. You act like an *** to him, and then get PISSED that he was pissed? This is not the place for attacking new members, especially for no reason. Shame on you both(and to the rest of you who are just being jerks to be jerks- so what- he's 17- I'd have killed to have this car when I was 17). If we see it again, you'll both get warnings.

Well I thought this would be a place of people talking about thier 8's and not worrying about HOW they got it. and I'm not spoiled and almost threw up from happiness when my dad took me down to the dealership and even almost passed out when he choose the extras. but I guess there are other websites where people can talk about thier cars. Thanx for those who were actual polite and understanding like Mamccubbin.

I might come back to just post some pics but I guess this place isn't for me for now, maybe someday I'll come talk to you guys again about experiences and what not.

See ya.

The correct path for kids owning cars! Taken from the life of Tim.

Age 14 (age you can start driving in Idaho) - Bought a 74 Dodge Duster complete with gold paint job for $400! Slid off road and scratched the side on some bushes and rocks Sold the Duster with some other parts for $500.

Age 16 - 77 Pontiac Firebird for $1000 off of golfing money earned from working nights and summers. Sold 2 years later for $1200.

Age 18 - 79 Bought Camaro with a 350 and almost all Edlebrock parts for $3500. Lots of chrome under the hood with a white bra and white luvars. Could run mid 12's to low 13's in the 1/4 mile. LOVED this car.

Got too many tickets... and had to sell the car... Sold it for $4400 and began building on my father's Cutlass when I was 19. After that it was Integra's for the next 14 years. 1988, 1993 and 2000 Type R.

Now the RX8! ~smiling~

That is the correct path in life! Only car I wrecked was the Gold Duster! No matter how responsible, an RX8 is a serious liability in the hands of someone that hasnt gone to a driving school!

well maybe their family has lots of money and a $30,000 car is a junker to them! we know nothing about them, maybe they decided a rx8 instead a ferrari or porsche for their first car. I cant imagine some well off people buying a $500.00 car for their son when their son could be seen driving a $30,000 car.

The reason I was impolite, was I see your parents setting you up for a big let down when adulthood starts. No matter what you think you know, you will know more in about 10 years.
My parents have been more than well off my entire life. The best thing they did for me is to learn the value of something. They never bought me anything out of the ordinary, except the $3,000.00 Bose speakers for my home when I was 21, (I'll argue the quality with anyone anytime). Other than that I had to earn every single thing I've every received, no amount of money has been given that I haven't paid back.
That said, I went to school on a full academic scholarship, and everything I have is well taken care of, I also know and prefer to work hard. I watch the people I work with spoil their kids, and they have turned out to be worse off because of it.
Excuse me if you believe you are the exception.
I hope you have a trust fund.
There are too many young people that expect something for nothing.
This is only one of the reasons our society is in peril.

You opened yourself for this when you said has anyone got me beat, like it's some sort of competition. If that's the case, you've cheated, and deserve to be called out.

If you are too thin skinned to take critisism (I don't think I was as harsh as others), then you truly are a whiney brat.

Work hard, take your indignation toward me and prove me wrong.

This is true... Still a car with that much power in the hands of a someone edging on testoserone might not be the best mix. I had pleanty of close calls that could of ended up MUCH differently had I not started out a little slower...

Definitely would of been fun though! My god... can You imagine driving up to HS in a car like that?

yeah thats the worst part. seeing it in a high school parking lot i give it about a month before someone gets jealous and slashes the tires or keys the paint or something like that beacuse they are jealous. That is 1 good reason why high school kids should not have nice cars, other people get too jealous!!!

Responsibility exists on many levels, especially in regards to a car. We all know that. We all accept that. As long as someone, regardless of age, can fulfill those responsibilities (even with help :P), no one should have a problem.

Yah, I can't say I haven't seen my share of spoiled brats. I came from a upper/upper-middle class area where many highschooler's first car was purchased for them by their parents (who weren't all yuppies, but a lot were hard working people who made a good living), most of whom abused that car and their driving priviledges. But there are always those exceptions, the young adults who appreciate and respect what they're given.

Who is to say Velocired isn't one of those? He is obviously enthusiastic about the car and seems to be realistic about his abilities in respect to the car. Based on a first impression, he doesn't seem like a bad person who is out to abuse the car, the road, and the law. So I say Cheers and Congratulations and hopefully we'll see more of you than you let on, Velocired.

RX8Amber... I hope that doesnt happen.

I could never understand why anyone would even think about keying a car. Though I did have an X once that did that... Lucky I caught her before she went through with it. It is amazing how jealousy does work!

I guess I respect my property which causes me to respect others just as much... that if I take care of their's, they will take care of mine just as much!

Hell you think a kid with a RX8 is bad a I just trained a 18 year old to fly a lear jet. The family has two jets father and son. They spent more than a RX8 cost just on training for two weeks. He was a nice kid! It is not his fault his parents are loaded.

Actually the youngest would be my pet snail. I just decided to give it to him just now. He was born about 2 hours ago, next to the little garden around my yard. He tells me I can drive it whenever I want to though. What a spoiled little animal!

Hey Velociredbeast:

Enjoy your new car, man. If you were fortunate to have someone to but it for you, good for you. I wish someone would but me one. You sound more mature than your years.

Peace!
