Question Won't rev over 3k, and radio static....

hey whats up. Im new here and looking for some help. I have a 2004 rx8 with the manual 6spd tranny. For awhile it has been a great car but i keep having problems with it one after the other. Im just over the 100,000mi mark. The first main issue i have is the car acts up by not revving over 3500rpm in any gear. I have found that if i can get the car up to 60mph on the interstate, put the car in neutral, turn if off, turn it back on and put it in 3rd and haul *** into 4th it would fix itself. It doesnt fix permanently though. It will run great for two runs no matter how long i drive it on each run but on the third run its back to not letting me get over 3500 rpm again. Also i found out that if i push the clutch in a little while im in 1st and 2nd, it will go slightly faster....idk but if anyone can help me out it would be great. the other problem is with my audio. it worked great forever but now all i get is really loud static to the point i cant hear the music at all. even if the volume is all the way down the static is still suuuuper loud. Thanx for all ur help!

Not being able to rev it up can also be your cat.. its either failing or already bad.

If coils/ plugs are bad, you should get your cat checked

i love how plugs and coils are the magic cure all for this car.

-"the steering pulls left and ive got a slight knocking coming from the right rear suspension"
-"oh thats easy. plugs and coils"

I actually think its not his coils and plugs but will be if the cat doesnt get fixed. A clogged cat keeps the engine from being able to build up any kind of power. The exhaust cant escape the engine so the engine cant complete the compressions cycles.

get your cat replaced before you damage your plugs.

Thumbs up

hey guys thanx for all the intel so far. Does the fact that i dont have the 30 pound muffler anymore effect any of these problems? does removing the muffler put too much stress on the cat? Its pretty much straight piped from the cat.

Thanks again for the help

Oh yea did anyone have any clue about radio problem? im not great with electrical problems haha

I'm quite certain the CAT is your problem. Since the car hit 100k, I would also change the coils/plugs/wires.

The radio static makes me think that it is the coils because a bad cat does not create electrical interference, but a bad ignition system might. Without any maintenance history though, it is impossible to do any diagnosis.

Plugs done last when? Have you ever replaced the coils.

Did the problem start when you eliminated the muffler? How long have you been running without a muffler?

The high energy of the coils gets terminated by the plugs through the plug wires. Any break along the way will result in lots of radiated energy which shows up as static on a radio.

Check your wires and replace if required.
A good bet is plugs at 25K miles with coils and wires replaced every 50K

If you've had misfires due to poor spark energy then your cat could be stuffed up too
