When I left Wisconsin last, they were still using salt on the roads. In general, I agree that in 3-4 days the main roads were dry and easy, but until then there are ruts from tire tracks on the main roads and after that its the ruts on the side streets that may cause problems for low clearance cars.

If you really live in the snow belt, then you may want a beater for the bad weather.

Montreal still uses rocks and salt. My Rx-8 is gonna hibernate this winter. Brrrrr......

So I'm buying my 8 pretty soon and live in Northern VA, where winter can sometimes be pretty awful. Anyone got any specific tires that we all should be looking to get, and even better where to get them for a decent price?

There's a few threads discussing winter tires in the Tires and Wheels section of the forum, and there's 2 ongoing sticky threads about Winter tires in the Canada section. All of those go into great detail about specific brands and sizes of winter tires (and wheels).
