windshield replacement

Has anyone had to replace a windshield? mine has a significant crack and must be replaced. any idea on the cost? the mirror has the auto dimmer and I was told that may make the windshield replacement more costly due to some wires for the mirror. Is this true? any comments appreciated.

PS- I probably won't be going the insurance route since I have a big deductible.

The homelink mirror should not be an issue. All they have to do is remove the mirror like any normal procedure. You can remove the plastic covering the wire and see for yourself. If you're being charged for more, your being screwed.

I had mine replaced last year. Everyone I called for a quote asked if I had the homelink mirror. The windshield didn't have any wiring for it so I never underrstood why they asked. I went with Safelite and had mine done for around $275 IIRC. Good luck.

There have been some reports on the forum of what seemed to be stress cracks on windshields. As I recall, most were replaced under warranty. If there is no obvious impact mark where the crack originates, take the car to your dealer and suggest to them that the crack may have been caused by a flaw in the glass or improper installation.

I'm commuting about 60 miles up I-75 every day. I got hit by some rocks thrown up by a semi last Friday. I didn't see any damage. On Saturday morning, there was a huge crack on my windshield starting from the very bottom about 4 inches long, then it zigs to the left for another 4 inches. There is not an area that shows impact. Anyone seen anything like this before?
