I don't know which ones yet, this is the first time I heard of windshield protection film... so more research is underway...

update: I now hate my Insurance Agent. She's been a good friend of the family for years but she really dropped the ball on this one. She makes a decent commission off of me considering she currently has my car insurance (3 cars) and 3 different home policies from me but she doesn't know how to call me back! 10 days and no phone call.... I'll deal with her tomorrow morning. /end rant

Dealership just called and said they'd install my windshield for $340 total. Going that route since it's an OEM approved windshield.

$340 total for OEM approved windshield......not a bad prices at all.

2 month ago i cracked mine windshield, and I went through sereval auto glass company and none of them carried the windshield for RX8. Dealer were out of stock on that item at that time so they ended up had to order it from japan and it cost me almost $800 to get the windshield replaced.

Yeah, paying $800 for a window is pretty steep... I should be getting my car back in a few hours so I'll let you guys know how the window comes out.

With my insurance windshield falls under my $100 comprehensive. My mom and stepdad have had to have numerous windshields replaced over the years because of rocks. My mom always tries to insist on using the body shop where we get our vehicles fixed if they need it. My stepdad prefers the mobile places and tries to insist she use them. The first time she had to have her windshild replaced due to a several inch crack from a rock he told her to use a particular mobile place so she wouldn't have to take it in anywhere. They installed her new windshield and two days later she noticed in the morning when she was going to go somewhere that the whole inside of the windshield was wet with big moisture drops on it, plus, when it started raining later on that afternoon the top corner started leaking because they didn't seal it very well. It then cracked from "stress" from not being sealed right or something and it also was too thin of glass or something about it that it wasn't right for her vehicle. She had to have it replaced and this time she took it to the body shop. They replaced it using the correct glass and everything. No leaks or problems.

My stepdad always insists on the mobile people and more often than not he gets an improper seal, probably because it doesn't get to set up long enough before he drives even though it sits for the number of hours they say it needs to. But then again, all his windshields that I recall him having this problem on was his 96 Chevy Tahoe, which also had three leaking windows brand new off the truck. There was probably something "off" with that vehicle from the beginning.

I haven't heard of a "free windshield replacement" coverage before. Could be because my company and/or state doesn't offer such a thing. Oh well. $100 if I need to isn't that big of a deal. I had wished the rock that hit my hood had hit my windshield instead.

That would just be zero deductable comprehensive. I carried zero deductable comprehensive and $100 deductable collision for many years, going back to when a new car cost $3000 or $4000, and $100 was a lot of money.

Over the years I've had one windshield and two or three windows replaced for free under that. Also the damage from a very clumsy break-in.

With the 8, I found I could save $200 a year by raising my comprehensive/collision deductables to $100/$500. As long as I don't run into things more than once every three years or so, I'll be ahead of the game.

I've got a couple of small chips that need repairing. They've never gotten any bigger and because they're up in each top corner (just about matching ), they're not in my line of sight.

Still, I agree that it's best to get these things fixed asap. Some chips do get worse quickly.

Finally got my car back! ($340 later...)

The dealership installed the new windshield for me and unless you look really closely, you can't even tell it's not an "original" mazda window. The only difference I can see is the small dark area behind the rear view mirror. On the original version, the shading in that area was not as dark as the one I have now.
I kinnda like the darker one...

I've got two goofy blue pieces of tape on it right now that I'm supposed to leave on until tomorrow so she'll get a full beauty treatment in the morning. (I asked the dealership not to wash her)

Sorry to hear it.

Yep, twice. The first time they used after market glass. Bad idea. The rear view mirror attachment was the wrong size and the mirror flopped around. They replaced it with OEM glass. Problem fixed. $635 ($500 deductible)

Had the new glass all of three weeks, got a rock chip. Been repaired but it still looks bad. Reduced my deductible to $150. Will replace my glass again soon.

Yeah, probably just my bad luck.

The story is better. I first took it to the dealer and they ordered OEM glass. When it came in and I brought my car in for the repair, the glass guy said the glass had a chip in the corner (shipping damage). I overheard the conversation and went to see for myself. The parts manager came out to look while I was checking out the glass. I guess he didnt know I was the customer standing right next to him when he said, "its fine, just put it in."

I told the service mgr that I wanted a new piece of glass ordered. He said he'd do it. FIVE DAYS later I called to see if they got the new piece of glass. The svc mgr said that parts would not order it (thanks for telling me!) because it was just fine. They filed the chip and installed it on another 8. Needless to say, they get no more of my business.
