still with the mustang point,

in my neighborhood there is a couple of high school kids that live at the same place of residence, one drives a red GT, and the other, a yellow v-6.

When I go driving and encounter the one who drives the GT he is almost ALWAYS going the speed limit, and I've never seen him peel out or try to race someone. (small town btw) But the kid with the v-6 is always trying to race me and I've seen him pulled over by the police more than once.

go figure.

Mustangs aren't really that bad. I'll never understand how a teen or early twenties guy affords an Evo. My insurance isn't bad, but for young drivers with a ticket or two we're talking $500 a month just for insurance. Mustangs depreciate so badly that a previous generation can be had for dirt cheap and the insurance is weighed down by all the secretaries and mid-life crisis guys that drive them.

i like this thread. i've never gotten the "why that car?" i've always gotten/heard the "his car is slow." Or, "why yellow?" Some dude with a mustang gt said my car was slow, yet, he wrecked his car, and had to spend all the money he was saving up (to buy a cobra intake valued at like a ridiculous 1500) to pay for the damages. Then to top if off, he didn't even know what GT stood for, i had to tell him. I'm related to a guy that owns a Sheldy Mustang GTH, very nice and fast, also owns an '01 GT, has about every mod besides FI, and he digs my car a lot. It's all about how mature the driver is really. Needless to say, any v8 would have some trouble keeping up in the twisties, they can't turn for ****.

I hear you all too well bro. I have a 97 Cobra, and I usually hear the exact same thing from just about everyone. Even so in that car, I still catch all the same "why don't you toss a supercharger on" blah blah blah. I get so sick of that crap, reguardless of the car i drive.

I'm sure with an 03, you got an endless amount of crap from people. I couldn't agree more with your reasoning for buying the 8, and completely love the reasoning.

Love the 8, reguardless of what others think. Stupid people always fail to realize that there is a lot more to a car than it's HP

hmm. Before I bought the 8, i looked into a few other cars. 1 ticket on file.

I was 23, had a 97 Cobra vert and a 97 Probe, and with those 2 cars, tossed a 05 STi, and then an 05 Evo on. Got quotes back from my local insurance agent. Full coverage on all.

$280 for the STi and others
$290 for the Evo and others.
$265 for the 8 and others.

I don't know what kinda insurance charged $500 a month, but if so, yur with the wrong company...

The Evo is a very nice car, but it's not exactly a Viper or Ferrari in insurance eyes.

SlipNSlide- stupidity, like hydrogen, is one of the basic building blocks of the Universe. Don't worry about those punks. If it makes you feel any better I beat the crap out of a guy in a Z71 who shot rocks on me while I was jogging and made him cry.

Actually, the only people I've encountered who in any way put down the 8 is on this forum. In Real-Life, I get lots of praise.

hm.. well. im sorry, not trying to cut this thread up, but.... a vette would rock us in the twisties.. as the vettes also have a near 50-50 weight distribution, good suspension, weigh about the same, have double the power and triple the torque....

Usually in most cases when a person buys a Mustang, they hate Chevy and vice versa. Im a true car enthusiast. It doesn't really matter what car you drive technology these days and how ever much money you want to put in your car, it can be made fast. Little Honda Civic DX's running 11 seconds in a quarter mile and so on. If a guy is level headed I just tell them I love cars. All makes and models. I praise there car for there strong points and they end up having a posotive conversation in the end. There are those that say there enthusiasts but only like there make of car. Say for instance a Mustang enthusiast loves his car but hates the camaro. Why because of trend. Once you get old enough to learn that trend is not always the only way then thats when you start having fun. Just wait untill you see my 8. I will be doing thing to it that people on here will hate, and some will like it. But I guarantee my 8 will be different. Some trends I will fallow.

I seen a post about viper stripes. Some were telling the guy they are nasty and not to do it and others where being facisiouse and agging him on. Well if somone likes viper stripes, racing stripes or what ever it is I will not rag on him about it. Some like under carriage lights others feel there just nasty. I won't dig a hole and put a fellow 8 owner in the hole and down grade his taste because I feel thats just causing negative tension amongst us. If somone askes for an opinion I will tell them. Other than that I see tons of people on here just thrashing peoples threads and volunterring there opinions. Most of the guys that go to our weekly meets in the bay area have learned Im a goofy guy but really down to earth and I can get a long with just about any car enthusiast. Its the Finatics you have to watch for.

You live in Ohio... Also, you're not a teen and probably get a cheaper rate for multiple cars. That was also probably before the Evo popped up at #2 for rate of theft claims. I don't see why you think 500+ a month is a stretch. I was never implying the Evo was like a Viper or Ferrari, just that it's expensive to insure and is an even more expensive car than a Mustang GT.

Its weird but I have yet to have anyone try to race me or give me any flak nor ask if its got a V6. So far all I've gotten is "Hey nice car, what is it?"

Just my quick 2 cents I'd like to add to the conversation:

I get challenged all the time. I live in Houston, Texas where there are just as many ricers as there are SUVs, and I've found the challenges to be quite entertaining. This might not apply to other states & cities, but RX's (7 & 8s) are very very hard to come by around here. However, there are LOTS of genuine car enthusiasts driving ricers around here (you don't need to own a nice vehicle to respect them), so they are very eager to race my 8 to see how they stack up.
7 out of 10 rice-drivers know that the RX-8's handling is among the best out of every sports car on the road. They also know that the RX-8 has a reputation for being "slow", and they just want to see how a "slow" sports car stacks up against their modded up Honda. They aren't *all* headstrong ********, ya know? Just a regular guy who can't afford a real sports car, and wants to guage his modded coupe up against a unique sports car with a reputation.

I accept challenges on 3 conditions:
1 - I know the roads
2 - There's no one around
3 - The driver is friendly & intelligent

I've raced a LOT of different cars, and I've only lost to an S2000 so far. I usually try to converse with them while at the light to make sure they aren't racing to prove something to themselves, but just becuase they'd like to have a little fun and see how our cars match up. After every race - the wins, ties, and loss, we've exchanged nothing but compliments and stories.
Everyone LOVES the sound of the Renisis, is blown away by the sudden increase in torque in 3rd gear, and is floored by how steadily the car holds itself in the triple digits. I think the only reason we RX-8 drivers seem to get hassled by ricers & teens more than anyone else is because the most commonly discussed statistics on 8's draw a hazy picture of the car's overall real-world performance...

We have "no torque," yet our top end is higher than the 350z & S2000?
We're a pseudo 4-door car with a decent trunk, yet we have perfect 50:50 weight balance?
We have a strange kind of engine that's really tiny, yet we can shift at 9k?
The engines are constantly recalled & burn lots of oil, yet they can outlast piston motors?
The last "RX" mazda made was a twin-turboed beast that has become the holy grail to Fast & Furious fans, so surely a FRIGHTENING amount of power must be lying dormant under the hood, right?

It's been my experience that there are 2 kinds of people that want to race RX-8's:
Those that have heard the stories & want to see the car in action for themselves.
Those that have heard the stories & want to prove that their modded civic is a better car.

Ignore the dipshits & make friends with the curious ones.

Enjoyed reading this thread
Here in NZ people seem to have a different view .

What I have found is the 8 gets huge respect . In my line of business I meet with people who are "financially challenged" quite a bit . I know if I rock up in my BMW 3 series (POS) they will be think - rich p***k , snob blah blah even though the beamer is worth $1/4 what the 8 is . In the 8 all I ever get is - "like your car bro" .
I think this has a lot to do with - hey its just a Mazda - I can afford a Mazda too .

People are always admireing it - especially young guys who always seem to want me to smoke up the tyres for some insane reason .
I think a lot of the credibility the car has is due to the RX7 batman - they all know how fast that rotary car was & just think that mine is in the same league. I guess over time they will all realise that it isn't that fast but its fun to get all the attention in the meantime.

By double the power, and triple the torque (464hp, 477lbft) I assume you are talking about the Z06.

I challenge you, sir. Find a Z06 driver in your area who is willing to toss his car as the limit in ANY twisty, ESPECIALLY off-track.

I am willing to bet you will be rewarded with a big fat *0* drivers..the majority of people who have the $70-90k required to buy such cars are OLD, and in the mood to cruise, while looking "cool". I doubt you wholeheartedly will find even a single Z06 (hell, even a regular C6 Vette) who will be able to keep up with you on a very twisty road.

Just to add my two cents. The two slowest cars I ever came across in the mountains were a Viper and a Corvette. Also, where I'm from, the mountain roads tend to be narrow; in this situation the extra inches of width of the Corvette become a real disadvantage. Also, on some roads the extra 100 pounds and higher polar moment of inertia of the Corvette is not a trivial disadvantage. On most roads (the fast ones) the Corvette would eat the RX-8 for dinner, but on certain roads a RX-8 would equal or even be faster than the Corvette. In fact, I know some mountain roads that are so tight and steep a Miata would be faster than a Corvette (and a RX-8).

That's nonsense. Go to just about any track day or autox and there will be plenty of Vettes there. Every autox I've been to in the last 3 years has had more Z06 vettes than all the Mazda cars (besides the Miata) combined.

Here in Wellington NZ, I don't think there's more than a dozen 8s and while I get plenty of "looks" it's nowhere near as much as I'd expect (or like - heh). And nope - I've never been "challenged" by one of the local hoons/ricers.
