Anywhere in the world, if you got a car that resembles anything sporty, you'll get challengers of all types. I got a friend with a Ferrari TR, and he says guys in family sedans with kids in the back light it up at lights. Often they only want to see what your toy can do.

I get challenges when I'm on my sportbike, which does a 10 sec/140mph trap quarter mile. Or others (always teens) hang out of their cars urging me to snap the front wheel up.

Nothing wrong with that, been happening since the beginning of the wheel, although there is a time and place for everything.

Still, I found that most guys can't do a proper launch, especially on low torque cars like the 8. Also, I found that most Mustangs are 6 cylinders, most STI's are Imprezas, most 300's don't have a Hemi, most civics dont have NOS, etc. etc.

Otherwise, I also found that benchracers are the lowest scum in the car enthusiast world, you know the type that quote 0-60 from different cars in different days in different conditions with different drivers, etc. etc. Ignore them at all costs, they add nothing.

Thank you ppl for all your comments~~I think I am going to change my driving style
I usually take a race when this happens to me. Because I don't think RX-8 is a bad racing car as other ppl say. Recently, there are many road check and plus all your comments, Racing on the street is REALLY BAD for safety.
Thank you guys~~!!!

I floor it (in 6th) and by 105 I pass him and all I hear is his turbo hissing and spooling as much as it can.

A Beetle Turbo S is still a Beetle. No respect for those cars. Just like SRT-4s

And to add onto the topic, I personally don't get any off-the-light races at all.
I think not looking over at whoever pulls next to me is part of it.
A car that you have no respect for still enticed you to passed him back at nearly 50% above the speed limit, and to prove what? That the only way you would have accomplished this, given the Turbo S driver shifted to the right gear and actually trying to pass you, was that he probably hit his speed limiter?

Without getting into the arguement of whether a little friendly drag race at the red light is correct or not, the Beetle Turbo S will be pulling on a stock 8 within the whole block, all day long.

Are you guys serious? A Beetle turbo S will pull on an 8? I had the same 1.8 turbo in my manual Passat, chipped no less, and there is no way it would outrun my 8.

Seems like you guys either can't drive your 8's, or you've been listening to guys like Ike, Blueyes etc. and the many non 8 owners here who spend their lives telling us our 8's are so slow.

but the 8 IS slow, they're not lieing when they say that, its the best car you can buy for less than 32k imo for many reasons but its power is not one of them, its just a slow car, its slower than EVERY SINGLE OTHER CAR in its class, that is slow to me.

What "class" is an 8 in? How do you define slow?

Oh, nevermind.

How can I win an arguement with a guy who thinks a 150 horsepower turbo Beetle (or 180hp is its an S) is faster than an 8.

So sad that your 8 is so slow.

Petter Solberg and the ghost of Richard Burns handbuild the STI in their basement. Chuck Norris handbuilds the Evo in his living room, without using tools and while perfecting his formula for cold fusion.

1.8T from VW kicking 8's? You guys must suck at driving. I used to have 2.0T Jetta and that thing still puts below 150WHP stock.
I don't think Chuck Norris will be happy about this....

How is it so hard to believe that a Turbo Beetle S has a chance against an RX-8 on the highway? It has 180hp, weighs 250 lbs less, and runs a low-15 1/4 mile. From a roll on the highway, 1) the turbo should already be spooled and 2) FWD has less drivetrain power loss than RWD. It's a driver's race.

The turbo, even once spooled, is still making 180hp. And a Beetle actually weighs about 3000 pounds.

But since we're on the subject, my buddies TDI actually torque'd away from a STI the other day. Those diesels have some grunt!

Last night I was trying to get into the right lane because I had been distracted in a phone call and my turn to the highway was coming up...so I tried to accelerate to get ahead of one of the cars, and then this ******* in some white souped up Accord all of a sudden speeds up as if I were challenging him (might have even been a V6 because the acceleration was impressive) and prevents me from getting into the lane. Worst thing is he almost rear ended me and I missed the damn turn and had to go all the way back around again. Before I made the U-TURN I saw him speeding down the street up to at least 70 mph. It's **** like this that I really don't need.

Sure its faster, so would my Mom's automatic Honda Civic wagon, it has overdrive don't you know.

Listen, for those of you that never been on a racetrack or gone to any race school, these mineut differences in performance (most cars that this forum talks about - s2000, 350Z, G35, WRX, Cobalt SS - are all within a sec. of eachother in a quarter mile) mean nothing. Nothing but bragging rights for the dickless benchracers here and other similar forums.

Motorcycles or true exotics are the top of the speed chain, then comes new Vettes/Vipers/911's and the like, than STI's/Evos and the like, then s2000/350Z/G35/ WRX/Cobalt SS/RX8's and the like, etc. The biggest differences within each performance class is ALWAYS the driver.

And, if you measure your cars potential by impromptu street drags, then you're a ******. Take it to the track, or even a solo 2 event for $20 bucks. Then if your still slow, blame yourself first, because if you go to the timesheets you'll see faster guys in slower cars.

Earn the right to call your car or motorcycle slow.

And, as anyone who has ever been to a track knows, 1 second is a HUGE difference. At 100 miles per hour, 1 second = approximately 147 feet, or roughly 10 carlengths.

You know what. My car is 2 years old and I've NEVER had this happen to me! Oh I get all sorts of looks and stares, but no one has every tried to race me. There have been times when people were driving fast and I didn't want them to pass me so I sped up, but no blatant races at all.

Ok, mr. take everything out of context. I'll repeat, it's always the driver. Those cars mentioned are usually within half a second of eachother WITH professional drivers. 99.9% of those on this forum are not professional drivers, despite what we think of ourselves.

Have you been to amatuer night at your local dragstrip? There are guys with WRX's in the 16's! And this is a simple 1/4 mile on a track with a sticky surface. On a full track this difference is far FAR greater.

I've spent many years and many summers at different tracks and schools, yet I still get humbled often when the real pro's show up.

It's always the ******* that talk about the fractions of a second that they couldn't extract out of their cars if their lives depended on it.
