You really didn't get ripped off. Take a look on Auto Trader and cars.com. I just bought mine last month, so I'm pretty familiar with what the market looks like. Granted, however, i was only looking at MTs w/ leather which are going to run a little more expensive, but you can definitely sell for more than $13,000. Just look on Autotrader to get an idea of what you should sell it for, be prepared to wait a month or two, list on craigslist with good pics and you'll be fine.

When I looked at posts on this forum that asked about prices on an '04 RX-8 with low mileage was, they were talking $12k - $14k, and quite frankly, that's unrealistic, at least for the Baltimore/Wash, DC area where I am.

I was looking on Autotrader, etc., for these ultra low priced 8s, and at the time, the best deal I could find (100 mi. search radius) was an '05 MT w/ 22k mi. for $16,250, and that dealer refused to budge because the price was already low.

So, bottom line, do some research to get a more accurate picture of the market in your area.

i sold mine in june with 32 or 36k (i forget) for 13k......but then again mine was an 04 GT 6MT and i thought i was lucky to get that much......for an auto you can expect 10-12 and i think the offer you got was a highball to get you in and interested....then when they did a full check you would have gotten hit hard

You guys are quoting prices for manual trans cars. There is seriously, all BS aside, such a stigma behind automatic trans sportscars, and especially automatic trans rotary engine'd sportscars, that they take a 2-4 thousand dollar hit versus an equivalent condition manual car.

I have seen autos going for the 10-13k range depending on condition and mileage...so it is definitely possible that you gave too much.

In all honesty, you will be doing well to get your payoff out of the car, unless the economy takes a sharp turn quickly. Bear in mind that winter is coming up as well as the holiday season, so people will tend to be even more conservative in the coming months for that reason. IF you don't sell it by halloween, you might have to sit on it until next spring...unless you are willing to back off of your "I really want to get as much as I can" idea.

Yes, again, the market for poor mpg, medium/small sportscars that are known as relatively unreliable as a group, is quite small right now, so you may in fact have to "give it away" if you really have to get out from under it now.

Thanks for the thread. It's a good sanity check for my 8K miles, 2004 GT 4AT, loaded minus Nav for $13,000ish 6 months ago.

Yeah, you overpaid if you bought it for $19K.

It is logical to assume that if you buy any car for $19,626 in March '07, then put over 15,000 miles on it and sell it again 18 months later, the price ought to be around $16.5K or the $17.5K you first listed it at.
That makes sense, but in this case, the beginning $$19,626 was just too high.

Plus.......it is an automatic. That doesn't help.

Just because this car is an automatic dosen't mean its only worth 13000 and if it were a manual it would be worth a whole lot more. I know most of you guys have 6 speeds and i agree that the automatic is a real dog, but this is still a very nice car and should bring a decent sale due to the very low miles and condition of the car. I'll prob have to keep the car for quite some time until some rich girl's dad from Northern Virginia calls me up and wants to cut me a check. Also, if you guys think my price is high, look at carmax.com They are selling '04 RX-8 with twice the mileage than mine for 19K. I bought my car back in March of '07 for that price with 5186 miles.

To further level-set. A green 6MT with just as low milage went for $15,500 here last month.

The car is located in Central Virginia, i have listed it on Craigslist Northern Virginia and in Richmond, Virginia. I recently paid the $64 dollar "run it till it sells" in the local Autotrader magazine. The car has been advertised quite a bit....to some of you who are confused as to how much im asking....i started out at $17,500 and ive dropped it down to $16,500....there is no way in hell im going under $15,500...i'll let the thing sit in the garage through the winter and maybe have some luck in the spring. I can't go under 15,500 , not when i see other '04 RX-8's with 50 and 60K miles selling for that price... and they have way less options. This car is going to have to wait for most likely a girl that wants this car because its a automatic, RED, and basically fully loaded.

I went to numerous dealers about 1 month ago when I was frustrated with transmission issues. 04 6 MT with 37k on it. I was routinely offered around 8-9k for my car on trade in. For that price, it would have made more sense to keep the car (which finally got fixed under warranty) and buy another vehicle.

People blowing up prices on sites like carmax, autotrader, cl, cars.com, etc doesn't mean they will sell for that price and they're worth that price. It's almost a guarantee that anyone in their right mind (who knows how mucht he car is really worth) won't pay anywhere near 19k for an '04 "with twice the mileage than yours".

Even dealers in Jersey were selling out nicely packaged manual '06s and 07's for under 20k the past Spring. Hell, I still have the newspaper ad from Open Road Mazda selling a brand new left over 07 for $19,999 and that's from May. Right now, you can probably buy a left over 08 for under 25k.

I don't think it'll make much of a difference if you wait til next Spring. You still won't get the price you're looking for. It'll be "another year older" also. The 04-5's being listed for "more than you car" online probably won't sell any where near those prices. Anyone can make prices up and try to get as much out of it. At the end, they either end up selling the car for thousands less than they asked or they won't sell the car at all .

It took me 3 months to sell my 04 AT in the summer of 2007, before gas prices even took off.

Id never trade a car in with transmission problems if it were still able to get fixed under warrenty, glad that you got it fixed though. Wow, 8 or 9K, thats really low, real scary. Just thinking, i saw a '96 Mustang Cobra with 96K miles the other day going for 9K.

Aighty, giving the info you guys have on my car, and please actually look at the pics of my car...the photo link that i had on the first post, what would you pay for this car, or what do you think its worth, being serious, not being an ***. I myself, personally would never bought this car for myself because its a automatic. I think it is slow as ****. I am much happier in my '89 Dodge Daytona Shelby, 5 speed, intercooled/Garret Turbo with 15 lbs of boost. But, like i said i got it for my wife so that she could have a fun car for a few years, she wants another baby so its time for it to go and i got her a Infiniti SUV, which she likes even more cause now she is king of the road!! But like i said earlier, i think this car is for a specific person, not for the average RX-8 enthusist.

At this point in time it is the general state of the economy that is driving the price of your 8. I bought an '08 vette last year for around $41k with a sticker price of $51k. If I had to sell it today I would be happy getting $33-$35K. Unless it is a STEAL it will take some time to sell. There is an a$$ for every seat out there whether it is an automatic or not. If you can wait until spring you stand a better chance. Oh yeah, are those cars listed with twice the mileage selling for a higher price or just listed at a higher price?

I dunno......when I was shopping, CarMax had AT and MT '04's with 25K to 40K mileage for 16K to 19K, and they were by my estimation $2K to $3K higher than private seller, which puts them at $14K to $16K.
Private seller I found to be between $13.5K and $16K.
Seems like every private seller I talked to owed $13.5K to $14.5K for their 04's and when they just plain wanted to sell it for what they owed, that is how they priced them.
Cars sold on this board.......$13.5K to $15.5K....sometimes lower.

The low mileage is offset by the automatic tranny....so: Tie as far as plus/minus value.

Based on my 10 month old research, before the gas hikes, I'd have to say all the above suggests somewhere between $14K and $16K.

I would think that this is the time people are going to seriously analyze the economy and gas prices, and think twice about a gas guzzling low MPG car, so maybe the best thing to do is wait until spring.

I can buy a $50,000 Acura RL that's two years old with 31k miles on it for $22,000 - the guy has had it for sale for 5 months.

I saw an 18 month TL for $19,500 with just 17k miles on it.


Times are tough.

try craigslist.org , dealers wanted my blazer for 2 grand (was my first car, i bought a salvaged car) i listed my car for 4kat 7p.m. around 830 i got 2 calls and 2 emails, all saying they have cash and want to meet with me, my ac was broken, and it had a a few dings/dents, and baby scratches, and i walked off with 3600 dollars at 11 p.m. thats a lot of money for a 16 year old :P

Try asking $15k for it. I know its lower than you want and the car has low mileage, but the demand isn't as high for an automatic, not to mention its an 04. You can find plenty of 05s and 06s on the market for $16-17k.

I think $15k - $16k is a fair price. But seriously, don't listen to those people who manged to pick up 8s for $13k. It's not realistic in the DC market. Just look at Autotrader. I think what people have said about the economy is true, and also no one's buying an RWD sports car going into winter. Nothing's wrong with your price, just your timing.

Also, I hear DaRotary is having trouble with this whole manual transmission thing, what with the chugging and clucking and all, you might want to see if he's interested.
