Why can't i sell my RX-8?!?!

I seem to be having a really hard time selling my 2004 RX-8 GT. The car has 20,745 miles and has all options except for Navigation. It is a automatic, velocity red, Aero Package, Rotary accents, sunroof ect.... I bought this car for $19,626 with 5200 miles in March '07. At first i was asking $17,500, now i have it dropped down to $16,500. I really didn't expect the value to drop so quick on this car from when i bought it, seems like the very low mileage really dosent make a differeance. I see RX-8's with twice the miles as my car, with less options, selling for a higher price.....whats the deal!?!!? The car is located in Chester, Virginia if anyone is interested! The 04's have many issues compared to the more recent models. Less demand for that year

Juice 09-27-2008 12:17 AM

My guess, its beacuse its an automatic.

RotaryResurrection 09-27-2008 12:20 AM

I didn't have to read much past "it's an auto...". That's why. I am not an auto hater, in fact my car was auto when I bought it. But you paid WAAAAYYYYYYY too much for an auto, especially the early 04-05 4sp, 4 port auto that is the slowest rx8 and least receptive to mods. They are also in the least demand. They are not bad to drive at all, but most people investing money into a sportscar want the most performance available, and they do not get that with the auto platform.

Most autos in that year range go for about 12-14 from what I can tell. I got mine for a bit over 10, although it had high miles and had been in an accident and been repaired before which took a bit away from the value.

04. n auto

^ You'd be surprised the amount of people wanting an AT..

yeah. The 04's arent nearly as bad as people make them out to be though. AT is probably a bigger negative to many than the fact that it's 04. Well, a combo of both. Since it's an 04, it isnt the 6 speed AT.

Oh wow I complete overlooked that. That will definitely contirbute to the lack of interest.

Also, the market for sportscars which don't seat 4 full size adults very well, get 14-18mpg, and often require engines in under 80k miles is not too high with the economy the way it is. The rx7 market is dead, too...built single turbo FD rx7s that were worth 18-20k have been struggling to sell in the 12-13k range.

Youre saying at 04 motor is typically going to last only 80k?

8 Maniac 09-27-2008 12:44 AM

people need to stop making that shit up lol. They probably will fail earlier since they, as well as a few following years, had to endure the damage of bad flashes and such, but there's no guarantee on how that will affect it. All you have to do is find someone who failed to change oil properly to get an 07 to be just as bad etc. Some 04's have never seen any issues, like mine. That is not to say my car has not had issues, but none that can be merely blamed on the fact that it's an 04. Just small stuff like my cat failing (aftermarket... was part of a bad batch at that).

Deathwatch 09-27-2008 01:13 AM

I have an automatic because of a shoulder injury, If I would do it again I would get the 6 speed, however I am happy with my 8. It's been alot of fun. It's an o4 though so I hope there's no trouble with it.

Deathwatch 09-27-2008 01:15 AM

One note for an 04 Auto I do recomend getting an oil cath for the intake.

ILoveFI 09-27-2008 01:26 AM

I'm guessing its because your asking price is kind of high... and it is an auto.

I got my 04 in Feb with 27k on it, I've put about 4-5k on it and all I've done is put the newest flash on it and replace the coils when they went out. Car is running perfectly. :)

tajabaho1 09-27-2008 01:47 AM

04 AT and you want how much now?

AJ's Shinka 09-27-2008 02:04 AM

04 AT= Engine rebuild, and then another engine rebuild, and then another after that.

But I like them otherwise.:)

I'm saying a considerable percentage of RX8 engines period are being replaced with less than 80k, and of that percentage, the highest percentage of replacements would be for early automatics.

Almost every core I have bought thus far, has been a reman. Almost every rx-8 being sold on autotrader or ebay is already rocking a reman. This should tell you something.

I am not bashing at all...I am a rotorhead myself. But one cannot deny the inevitable truth...rx-8 engines are constantly being replaced across the country, thus the reason that there are always some 8's in the service department, and the reason mazda extended the engine warranty.

Not necessarily true. My car was an early 04 build AT, with just under 118k miles on the original block, before I converted to MT. Car still ran fine, albeit with a slightly slow startup due to borderline compression. In fact, the car's automatic transmission was a mazda reman, but the engine was original.

Thanks for everyone's reply, i do agree that the fact that my car is a Automatic is a good reason why its hard to sell, and the fact that it is a '04 prob dosen't help, but do i really need to "give" this car away to sell it? When i say "give" i mean sell it for $13000, that is what CarMax offered me. I thought they were crazy. Retail value still says its worth just over $20K on KBB.COM Remember guys, this car only has 20,740 miles and its the original motor, with no issues. Ive never even had any problems with flooding either. Its had all the recalls up to date.
When I bought this car i felt like i was getting a good deal.....it had 5186 miles on it, it was in MINT condition, the nicest used car ive ever seen. With the original sticker price of almost $32,000 i paid $19,626. That price was just above trade-in value which at the time was about 19,000 and retail was almost $25,000. The value of the car really dropped faster than i thought it would, but right now, i really want to get the most for the car. I still owe $14,300 on the car so i can't take a loss. Bottom line is, this car is worth a lot more than $14,300. I won't keep the car because its a auto, if it was a manual id keep it for myself, but i bought it for my wife and now she is driving a Infiniti SUV so we have no use for it. Thanks again for everyone's reply.

You got jobbed at the dealer when you bought it. I think being an AT, you might want to take the 13k that carmax offered.

you got ripped off, big time.

and who actually follow KBB value these days ?

You might be able to get it off for around 14K, but dont expect anything more than that.

04RX8man 09-27-2008 10:48 AM

probably because it's an auto....
