Search for an old thread title "Gear Ratios" or something like that. I think the calculation are at the end.

its gonna be around 7 flat.

but i really honesty fail to see the point of buying a sports car in auto. having a sports car with a automatic totally defeats the purpose of a sports car.

7 flat, no fricking way.
Try 8.5, low stall speed[power] torque converter + tall [and infrequent] gearing from a 4 speed automatic.

The TSX automatic is 8, so 8.5 is reasonable and acceptable, but not for the money

I see alot of guys around here driving auto sports cars. 95% of them are just driving the cars to look cool and show off. IMHO it's a waste of a good car. Kinda like the guy that'll buy an H2 and put 24 inch rims on it. That completly defeats the function the car was designed to perform. The latest poser car to hit the streets has to be the BMW Z4. It's not even being offered with a manual box.

whoops... I gotta stop smoking those funny cigarettes. I could have sworn that I read an artical stating that the Z4 /w manual wasn't going to be here till 2004. Maybe it was another car.

The Z-4 (both 2.5i and 3.0i) do come with a 5-speed manual standard. (Go to www.bmwusa.com and check. If having a sports car with an automatic totally defeats the purpose of a sports car, look at Ferrari 360, MB C32, Audi RS6, etc., they come with auto or w/ sports-shift (just like the RX-8), and they are still great sports cars and are still fast. People getting auto (sports-shift) doesn’t mean they don’t know how to drive a stick, want to look cool and to show off. It’s just the matter that they want to have the convenience of an auto, while can still enjoy the pleasure of driving w/ the ability to change gears themselves. Moreover, they are getting the RX-8 is because they want to enjoy the power of the rotary, the exceptional (overall) performance of the RX-8.
If driving an auto RX-8 is a waste of a good car, then I believe the RX-8 is not a good car anyway. So no matter getting a 6MT or 4AT, enjoy the 8!!
Zoom-Zoom!!!

lol no, its totally different. i dunno bout the c32 or the rs6 but what ur talking bout are REAL manuals that just dont have clutch pedals. ferraris, the bmw m3's SMG, and the new R32 volkswagen all have these kind of transmissions. these cars have real shift capability. they actually have a clutch, just no clutch pedal. they ARE REAL manuals.

the rx8 ,like alot of other cars have gimmecky automatics that are often called tiptronics, manualmatics, e shifts, sport shifts, etc. they are just plain old automatics that allows u to "shift" which takes like 2 seconds and has alot of restrictions. so no its not "just like the RX-8".

The Ferrari's f1 style sports shift is much different from the rx-8s. The smg - sequential manual gear box is different from your average sports shift including the rx-8. The smg allow you to have the performance of a manual and the convenience of an auto. The 360 modena, mr2 spider, and the m3 all have the sequential manual gear box but the rx-8, mazda 6, acura cl/tl, all those cars come with slush boxes with a wanna be manual gear box. They give you a very small or no performance gain. Im not trying to bash people who get the auto, if you need the convenience then go ahead and get it I was thinkin about a smg for the rx-8 when one of the prototypes had it, but didn't make it to the final cut. Besides the rx8 not having the smg I was thinking of not getting it due to the fact that true smgs are a very expensive option. I think the m3 smg is a 2000+ dollar option.

SMG is great for track purposes, because they perfectly rev match downshifts, do launch control on different 'modes', etc...

But if you're just blastin thru the twisties I don't see the excitement coming from that, as you get with all four appendages working... feet on clutch/gas, hands on wheel and shifter... It's a symbiosis.

People that don't drive manual or find it a chore will never get that joy I do from driving one. But that's why SMG is there.

I just think it defeats the purpose of a car oriented to put a smile on your face... you just don't know it until you're matching the revs yourself, heel and toeing and modulating the clutch/gas to get your tail end out on turns just a tad for fun....

But as a manual lover... I can't explain that to manual haters

Yea, I think a manual is the only way to go, it keeps you always alert on the road and give you much more control of you car

To answer the original question, based on CarTest2000, which is a software program used to calculate car performance, the 0-60 time for an RX8 AT is about 7.4 sec. This is using the latest weight and auto gear ratioes.

Has anyone seen the articles on the tranny in the new Audi TT 3.2? Very cool...two clutches, one for 1st, 3rd, and 5th gear and another for 2nd, 4th, and 6th. When the tranny shifts from one gear to the next, the higher gear is preselected and is spun at the same rate as the lower gear. The switch between gears is seamless...no lag at all between shifts.

I think that this is the next big thing in SMG transmissions....

I personally don't mind sports cars being in automatic. I personally would never buy one (I drive a '96 blue Mitsubishi 3000GT 5-speed) but if the hp is the same then why not? You may lose a few 1/10 of a second but no big deal.

The RX-8 however, loses a few seconds, and THAT IS a big deal...you go from 250 to 210 hp...not good, my friend...my advice, get the 6-speed manual...if not, then you're paying for a handicapped car

that's my 2 cents, and btw, this is my first post, yay!

I ran the simulation in cartest2000 with all the correct specs including the custom torque/hp curve for the manual and auto both with only the driver and loaded with passengers and stuff. I assumed sport suspension and 18 inch weel/tires for all the cars. The manual numbers are very consistent with current magazines' tests so I presume the auto should be very close too. Here we go:

NOTE: ALL THIS INFO IS FROM A PERFORMANCE SIMULATION SOFTWARE, REAL NUMBERS MAY BE CLOSE OR NOT AT ALL

........................Manual.....Manual(loaded). .....Auto.....Auto (loaded)

Curb Weight.....3029............3029..................3 053.........3053

Test Weight......3219............3765.................. 3243.........3790

0-60..................5.98.............6.77......... ..........7.30..........8.23

0-100...............15.50............17.74.......... .......20.47.......23.83

0-1/4 mile.........14.47...........15.15................ .15.42........16.08
@mph...............97.87...........94.32.......... .......88.51........85.37

fuel econ..........20/30...........19/29.................27/36.......24/34
(cty/hwy)

From what I saw here, it seems the auto will move close to the way the manual will do when loaded up...

As was mentioned in a thread a few months ago on this same topic, even the venerable Corvette comes standard with an automatic, manual transmissions are optional.

Get what you want...it's your $$$$!

LOL.
What's the purpose of H2, what are you going to do with it go to war, go and off road with it "I'd be crazy if I have a hummer and see a scratch"... That is the purpose of H2 to showoff. If you have money you can do what ever you want, and if you have a hummer you also can drive however you want "legally".
Also nothing is wrong looking cool in a sports car, most of the time on the streets is to look cool , how is it a waste...not everyone is going to modify their cars and use it on the tracks.

Yeah, I love those 7 series BMWs with manuals!:headsmack

Doh!

Agreed with those above - there's a HUGE difference between a manual trans with hydraulic servos controlling the clutch and shifters (a la Ferrari F1 system, BMW SMG, Toyota SMG, Alfa Selespeed, Maserati Cambiocorsa, etc. The Audi DSG is by far the best of the bunch), and the regular torque-convertered slushboxes with some fancy electronics in front to control shifting (Porsche/Audi/VW Tiptronic, Mazda, etc.) A slushbox is a slushbox, and diminishes the sportiness and fun of any car, but especially a sports car. I refuse to own an automatic trans car, even in my family hauler (Audi allroad), I certainly wouldn't have an auto in a sports car. Life is too short to drive boring cars.

Regards,
Gordon

yea and the auto rx8 also is only 4 gears, which is really sad. most modern autos have at least 5 gears

Doh!

blah, the past 7 series(the E38) had manuals. then that bitch *** chris bangal came along and messed everything up. there is much hate for chris bangal on the bmw forums.

but to be fair, the new 7 series is the first production car ever incorporating a 6 speed automatic
