i was just browsing cars at carmax (not to buy, just because they have variety) and i just kept coming back to a titgray with tan/black interior.
i just knew it, it was perfect. it was like when i meet the occasional girl that i like and i just know, i just know that'll be mine.
i saw it and said yes.

the wet spot on the front of my pants when i walked up on it in person was an indicator that yes I like the styling. Then the test drive messed up the back of my pants. The look on the face of the young salesman as the tach beeper went off at the top of 3rd gear was pretty satisfying as well

The experience of ownership I had from 1985 to 1988 when I had my '85 RX-7 (last year of the original body style, and I think the best year ever for a rotary-powered car. LOVED that thing!).

I was pulled to our local Mazda dealership as the result of a newspaper ad, advertising a brand new RX8 at $4000.00 off MSRP. The salesman backed the brand new machine out of the showroom and handed me the keys. The salesman stayed behind. The huge grin on my face gave me away when I pulled back into the lot 45 minutes later. The test drive cinched it.

There were a number of factors. The delight of driving 3 prior Mazda rotary cars, having all that huge crush space in the nose saving my bacon in one of the aforementioned 3 prior Mazda rotary cars, and having enjoyed watching the car evolve from the initial show-car prototype to the production model all played factors. Knowing that it would accommodate a baby seat and my wife at the same time was a major plus. In the end, however, the simple truth is that when I walked into the showroom, there was a very well equipped Touring model right in the middle of the showroom, directly in my path, with the same colour scheme as the 1968 Ford Mustang I'd learned to drive in, you could of put a fork in me, because I was done!

For me it was the tailights filled with water, I thought it was the coolest thing. To finalize the deal, I negotiated a gold fish into the deal for my water filled taillights. Then the gold fish died and the car wasnt as cool anymore. So I put a bunch of aftermarket stuff on it, but every night I cry in joy thinking about how much I miss my water filled tailights.
Ive had way too much coffee today.

writing them a big check.
Honestly: two things
1) red / black interior
2) the TEST DRIVE!!! An absolutely joy to drive this car. The (2nd) sales guy knew to STFU and just let me drive it.

Probably a number of things. Actually was pretty intrigued with the 8 when i think Motor Trend featured an RX-8 concept coming into production. Always been a fan of the RX-7 and never really got to own or buy one of those since I was too young back then when those things were being sold and not hooked up to the extreme. So i saw the 8 as a chance to get in a rotary engine.
Still looking at pictures, noticed that it had suicide doors, cool, it might be semi pratical. This was probably in 2002 or 2003. Before they actually came out.
Then 2004 came along, then 2005 came along, for a few months, completely forgot about the car, trying to focus on other things, but everytime I saw an 8 on the highway, without a lot of traffic and how it passed me.........the road presence.....with the rear end, tailights, the way the bumpers and rear fenders look hunkered down while you are sitting in another car. Very distinctive, looked more expensive than it is. I love the 8 in motion. Then in 2006, Jan or Feb, went on my first test drive at the dealer, Red on Red Leather. By then, read all the reviews about how its underpowered, blah blah , it sucks, blah blah blah......drove it myself, felt like it had more than enough power. Felt comfortable going down the road. I remember pulling out.......and not even trying to go fast, I think i was hooked on how cool the rotary sounded and how it had more oomph than i expected because of what people were saying.
So a few months pass, pretty much obsessed with the car, and i heard how mazda was having this zoom zoom event, test drive all their cars and what not, Took the 8 out again........this time, on a short road course, and how it hit turns and how it felt composed. Yeah that sealed the deal there, that told me right then and there, this car is awesome, I can't pass it up.
Then of course later in 06, was really trying to get a leftover, this one dealer had what i was looking for, exact color and option combo minus the spoiler. Plus the fact the incentives they had going on then......pretty much sealed the deal. Test drive 2x and the price.......and lookin back 2 years, def do not have one regret, still love driving it.

Read, searched and found everything I could on certain cars. Picked it out, waited and waited to find a good deal. Found it, bought it, happy as hell about, not looking back.

I liked the body style. I wanted something fun, manual, and DIFFERENT. I wanted a car that not alot of people in my area have. Well, theres maybe 3 in my area that i've spotted. So I got what I wanted. It was between this or a Saturn Sky....

the test drive. i told the saleslady, "i'm gonna take this corner a little hot" and she didn't mind at all. after the 30 mph 90 degree turn i smiled and laughed instantly when the car turned like it was on rails, and told her i was in love.
i've also been virtually test driving this car on GT4 with a driving force pro steering wheel, as well as my other options. in reality, the gti was too floaty, the gto was too heavy, and the cooper s was... well, my coworker had a cooper at the time.

The price is one major factor.
I had a few requirements for my car, seat at least 4, be RWD, 5 or 6 spd, have some trunk space, handle awesomely and payments around $300/month. RX-8 DUH.
I came to love it for its uniqueness and every person that gets in my car says they love it or if they can have it. quick answer: NO!

^^^Well said, but you don't have to yell.
For me they took 11k off the sticker and she was brand spankin new. Okay she was a left over Shinka from a Mazda Dealership going out of business. Still I am the first owner and my color is rare as well.

Well first, like any true sports car buff, I value handling—and, for lack of a better term, the way the car feels—above all else. So when every RX-8 road test raved about the way the car felt, I was intrigued, to say the least.
Second, I've owned three Miatas, and loved 'em. So I've long been a fan of Mazda and their sports car philosophy of putting feel and handling first. And I love their commitment to the rotary engine, despite what must be enormous pressure from the hordes of humorless, Blackberry-toting bean counters to cast it aside. Bravo, Mazda!
Then there's the rotary's wonderful elegant design. Just 3 moving parts, and small & light so it can sit low and back in the car for a lower center of gravity and better balance. Love that. A sports car with the same dimensions as a Porsche 911 that somehow can seat four adults. Brilliant. From Betamax to MacBook to iPhone, I've always rewarded smart, superior design in my purchases; the fact that most of my fellow Amuricans don't "get it" makes owning an 8 that much sweeter. Let 'em have their Dell computers, their Ford F-150s; their "American Idol"—I want quality.
The test drive? That was just icing on the cake.

Brilliant, as always New Yorker. My thoughts exactly.
