I have been checking out the Mazda RX8 stuff because I'm planning to get one myself sometime this year. I'm sure all you guys have it owned already. Can anyone give me some pointers or highlights plz?

Just take a test drive and you'll know why you should get one.

Like all cars, the RX8 makes some compromises... as always, test drive before you buy.

Cons:
  • low torque
  • soft suspension results in some body roll
  • poor fuel economy (15-17 MPG city, 21-23 highway)
  • consumes 1 quart of oil every ~2000 miles (by design)
  • no spare tire
  • small trunk opening
  • special procedure for cold-engine shutdown
  • not many options for power mods
  • radio LCD is low resolution, doesn't display much info, and is hard to read in sunlight
  • poor rear visibility
Pros:
  • tight, responsive steering
  • smooth short-throw shifter
  • lightweight for a 4-seat RWD car (base 6-speed model is ~2880 pounds)
  • 50/50 weight distribution
  • center of gravity low to ground
  • low yaw moment
  • balanced and stiff chassis
  • resistant to understeer
  • predictable and forgiving nature nature makes it easy to drive at the edge
  • excellent road feel
  • good high-end power
  • instantaneous throttle response
  • smooth engine with linear output
  • 9000 RPM redline
  • rotary engine is durable
  • comfortable, supportive seats
  • soft suspension enhances ride comfort
  • already-impressive handling is easy to improve
  • 4 doors
  • large interior (for a sports car)
  • large trunk (for a sports car)
  • rear seats surprisingly spacious (good headroom also)
  • two child seat anchors
  • well laid-out gauges and controls
  • aesthetically pleasing exterior and interior
  • 1.8 quarts between low and full on dipstick (means oil doesn't need to be constantly topped off)
  • <$25k street price for base 6-speed model
If your priority is straight-line acceleration, look elsewhere. If you want sports-car driving dynamics, comfort, and practicality at a reasonable price, the RX8 may be for you.

You will know right away after a good test drive whether or not the car is for you or not. You will just know.

As for pointers, I would read up on this forum and you will be prepared for just about anything you will ever encounter with your 8.
