Made a tragic mistake

Let my teen drive it.
Didn't go well.
My insurance was nice enough to total it, but I didn't have time to pull the aim intake or BHR coils. Likely to be a junkyard find for someone in western pa.

Actual driving feel may be different, but since I've never driven a new-gen Camaro, the test numbers are all I have to go on.
Seems like there are too many factors for that to really be an apples-to-apples comparison. We're talking about at least half a decade since that skidpad test was done on the R3, so different tire technology - hell, even on the same day the two cars are likely wearing tires that perform differently. Tires make a huge difference. Also, who knows about the testing surfaces, temps, etc.

I agree though that the new Camaros seems like great all-around sportscars - especially the V6 which has great power and better balance vs the V8.

Drove to from WNY to CT this weekend to visit family, almost 1K miles round trip. Ride was comfortable, car rode nice, but that drone between 3700 and 4500 is a killer, 6 1/2 each way, never doing that again, lol.

Learned some stuff.

This weekend I learned a lot of fun facts about my ride!

  1. When someone in the forum recommends covering the battery with a rag (or some non-conductive item) while working in the engine bay, do it. Don't cross polarity (inadvertently or otherwise)! It's easier thank one would think.
  2. The 120A main fuse is best removed and replaced when you have long tweezers to put the nuts back in place. Placing a baseball cap under the detachable fuse assembly (engine bay, left front) helps catch the nut too.
  3. L110-67-730 relays are not carried at any dealer or parts shop around my neck of the woods! They're probably made by unicorns.
  4. Luckily, if you damage only one of the relays, you can mix and match the set (3) to your liking. Either you have a set of working headlights, or you can have a running car without working headlights. I chose the latter until my expedited package arrives. Maybe I can leave work early as a result of not having headlights for the next couple of days.
All in all, a more relaxed weekend as I ended up mostly driving either my wife's CX-5 or my daughter's 3 looking for parts (or solace).

You should always disconnect the negative battery terminal when working on the car. I have never heard of or recommend covering the battery with a rag.

But I guess you learned that lesson already, just be glad you didn't fry more stuff.

Went on a short trip out of LA with my girlfriend. We decided to head to some natural hot springs. My 8 has been running tremendously, just saying that as a precursor. Now these hot springs, Deep Creek if anyone know CA, are difficult to get to. You've got about 5 miles of uphill uneven, rocky dirt road to get through. I grew up on a farm in upstate new york so the driving wasn't foreign to me, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't catch the occasional rock or two on the way up there (and down). Now I don't know if it's all the dirt that got swirled around or rocks bumping something loose (I know, this was a bad idea), but when I got down after being in first the whole trip up and down, I decided to clean off the carbon.

There was a nice straight and I redlined through first, and knew there was a problem. I'll try and post everything I felt/heard. So at 8k + (not below) when you shift from 1 to 2 it feels like the whole tranny jumps, there's a bang, though the shifter doesn't move. So I don't believe tranny mounts, also when I installed the engine about 4k miles ago, I changed both motor mounts, so that can't be the issue.

When I visually inspected the bottom the only scoring I found from rocks and such was along the exhaust pipe and the heat shield of the cat looks like it got bent back.

Other than the jump from first to second, there is also a similar sound though lesser when going from 2nd to 3rd (only at redline). I also noticed a grumble when removing my foot from the pedal in 4th (sometimes in 3rd), instead of the high pitched rotary whine that sounds like an airplane turbine.

Also as I accelerate, or let off the throttle, but never really when I am cruising I here this sound from the engine bay like a purging of air/sand papering sound. Could be a slipping belt? It should be noted that the sound is not constant but happens randomly as I drive.

I also noticed when cutting sharply right, it sounds like some thing rubs near the wheels on the right side, gonna head to autozone and see if some plastic rivets in the wheel shrouds will stop this.

Last but not least, it still starts up just fine, but there is a deeper sound while the engine spins, makes it sound less like a rotary and more like a v8...my best guess is there is clearly something messed up internally with the tranny. I've got no CELS, and no leaks from the trip and apart from the visual damage to the exhaust system, no other damage was visible.

Gonna have to take it to a rotary shop out here, but whatever input you guys may have would be helpful. The moral of the story, the rx8 is not a rally car...don't take it off roading

I put the Ls coil kit on today. The car is extremely hard to start. But when it does it has so much power i cant believe it is compression. When it is running and i let of the gas it stalls. The batt has been disconnected for a few weeks. The starter is good shaft sensor is good batt is brand new redtop and terminals are brand new. One question about the ess(eccentric shaft sensor) is there a gap set spec? because it can only get so close.

You should have been given a separate sheet of paper that shows three values with an RPM speed. The way that they presented the info here doesnt say much...

Straightened some oil cooler fins before driving to work. Up where I work it is 104 degrees out, which didn't make my car very happy. Had to drive 55 like a grandma to avoid overheating.

So, let me get this straight. You think straightening your oil cooler fins caused your car to overheat?

Not at all. It was just something I did with my car today

The overheating tendency has been an ongoing issue since it got stupid hot in SoCal this month. I keep an eye on the coolant temp via OBD2 to keep it from getting to 230F. Probably I need to check the condition of the radiator foam.

What happens when your S2 overheats? When it does, what mods and fluid type, and level do you have/use?

Nice! Hope you labeled everything well. :P

Today I got another CEL for my SSV solenoid, so I pulled the UIM, checked all 3 solenoids (all were working), cleaned the connectors and reassembled. Hopefully that's the end of it. Hrmph.
