warranty
i am on the verge of buying a rx-8. i did a lot of reading on it and came up with the conclusion it tends to have a little bit more problems then your average economic friendly car. but this isnt meant to be a average economic friendly car so that isnt going to affect my decision. i looked into the rsx-s and civic si which were the same prize range as the 8 but the 8 won me over.
i read in the other thread that the 8 needs an engine replacement for some people. is this kind of problem covered under warranty? along with the engine, there were cat, sparkplugs, battery, etc. replacements. the new car i might buy has a active warranty so hopefully this replacements will be covered under it.
and finally i found a deal for an 05 8 that has 11K miles and the dealer is asking 20. is this considered a good deal? i saw the carfax and its clean. also are there any callbacks for the 05 year?
thanks in advance.

recalls and service bulletins...

Not ALL the 8's require all that stuff you just listed. Service Bulletin issues are only "fixed" if the vehicle actually has the problem.

Overall, I don't think that reliability is any worse than 'average' cars. They are more hands on than a normal car, but anyone that researches the 8 before they get one knows that going into their purchase

If the 05 was made after March then the starter, spark plug and battery are already installed. The engine recall effect cars mainly in hot regions and Autos more so then manuals. Over all the car is pretty good on reliability, the main issue is if you do have a problem which isn't obvious or uncovered by computer analysis you will probably have a hard time getting Mazda to honor warranty repairs, they are really bad in terms of their service support. There are a lot of people on this board driving around with defective cars Mazda will not service. ie, mileage issues, marble in blender issues with engine, etc.
Great car but be aware of the warts.

My advice is to ask around about the reputation of the dealer. As long as you have a good service center in your area, your 8 should not have more issues than any other car.

You may get a good dealer that will go the extra yard or hopefully you'll get a car, like most, that dose not have one of these faults but if you do your screwed. I know I've been there and as stated the Regional rep will not even call me back, I have never even spoken to him.
If you still think that my opinion is an over statement look up JD Powers evaluation of Service Experience. Mazda is rated right at the bottom of all car manufactures. Actually 3rd from the bottom out of around 50. Daewoo was rated worst but I believe they are out of business.

Me likee long time......
My dealer/my car is great!
Driving hard since August 2003.
I can't say it's been problem free - steering, cat, starter etc, but all fixed under warranty with no problems, and a smile!
I would buy it again, knowing what I know today.

I have also been an owner since August 2003. I have had excellent service from my dealership/maintenance center. I have never been denied warranty work even after modding the hell out of my 8.

I am a meat popcicle
I've owned mine since July 2003. Nothing's ever broke on it (well, the A/C **** broke a long time ago, but they fixed that). I've taken it in for all of the recalls, sometimes they've done work (like the oil pan baffle problem), but most of the time they didn't. It's one of the most trouble free cars I've ever owned.
Of course, now that I've said that it'll crap out on the way home and need a new engine
