They were supposed to be 250!
Is 250 the current rating in Japan? I don't recall what happened that it was dropped here during the release. Something about the cat and emissions? Where did 280 come from, I've never heard that. Now I need to go back and play GT4...

the type s in gt4 must be the 6 speed. in the game it is 246hp but when you go in to the dyno graph it says 280. the rx8 and rx8 "e" must be auto matics rated at 207hp , in gt4

The rumors from Mazda suggested that they might build a car that would make 280 at 10k rpm, this was before and during the RX-Evolv period. Next, the brochures that came out at the time of the car being officially called RX-8 suggested around 250hp. When the car came to market the published figure was 247(April 03?). Within a year Mazda provided new numbers and offered to buy cars back from few disappointed customers. The new figure was then 238. At around the time of the introduction of the 06 model Mazda complied to the new SAE methods and the car has since that time been rated at 232.
That's my rough take on the history of the rated hp of the US market RX8. If I'm not mistaken, the Japanese market version has been rated at 250ps until 09 and it is now rated at 235ps (232hp).

380hp rex huh? Was that on the stock 5spd, PPGs, or did you do the 6spd swap. I always worried about my trans just at stage 2, but nothing ever happened to it.

I bet he's trying to estimate his crank HP and probably had 280ish WHP and a VF series turbo. Yes, more stress, but certainly doable with the stock drivetrain, especially if you're not launching it.
