is it true the average life-span of the rx-8 is only about 70,000-80,000 miles?

15 years is a long time. As a comparison I also looked up a 2005 Nissan 350Z, which to me is another example of a sports car with pretty high depreciation. NADA showed $8400 for the same mileage car.
The thing that cracks me up is how cheap the interior feels in the Nissan compared to the Mazda. The Nissan VQ has problems, but they can easily go 200k. The point being the Renesis is dragging down the value of what is otherwise a really good car.

If you are paying US$8.4k for a stock 2005 350Z, you are high.
I have seen 370Z go for under CAN$13k which is under US$10k.
Instead using these value books, have you tried actually using Craigslist and see what people are asking for them? When I post up an ad for my used car, I would probably see what my competition is like and set a price with that.

That's still pretty expensive for an NB. In fact, NA is likely more expensive than NB.
Either way, a 350Z or NB will be cheaper to run. Engine reliability aside, the Renesis is more thirsty than an LS engine found in a Corvette(that makes 400+BHP stock), let alone a 350Z or a Miata.
And there is the fact that fewer people know how to work on rotaries. That probably also doesn't help.
It's all about supply and demand. Demand on RX-8 just isn't high.
