Replacement CC

Dealership wants 3k just for the converter, any aftermarket should theoretically work just pop out pop in right? Error code 420.

Presumably I'm reading the code right, the exhaust always smelled a bit though pretty sure it's gotten worse Also recommnedations on ccs?

Taking off the cat and inspecting it is the only way to be 100% sure.

You can look for an OEM unit for a junkyard as long as you check to make sure it is still good. Still, a new unit shouldn't be 3k, maybe half of that excluding labour.

Most aftermarket units will not last long due to how hot rotary exhaust is. The ones that last will cost quite a bit, similar to a properly priced OEM unit.

If you don't mind the smell, don't have inspection and don't worry too much about your health, plow the cat empty and put it back on.

Magnaflow 49150 and 23909 listed as direct fit, 700 and 338 respectively, and oem v hm. Not much posted on 49150, guess most people went with the cheaper option, seems some people having o2 sensor mounts not lining up on the 23909 and one guy on the 49150, no listing of how it turns out after a while. Apparently someone's oem one melted anyways, probably not too hard to find one junked. Just replaced the cat on the rx7 also, fun year.

Find out why it melted. While not uncommon it could be a symptom of an ignition or other issue. You don't want to melt the new one too.

And replace with OEM, anything else is a short-term solution even if direct fit.

You can’t just physically check it. The catalyst function can stop working and still appear undamaged and functional. Generally speaking, when you get that code it’s toast. A bad sensor doesn’t cause it. It has it’s own codes for that.

sigh ... no, everything else is not a short term solution. You can buy an HJS cat converter and have it installed in your OE pipe by a muffler shop for a lot less. It may depend on where you live though. It won’t have a KARB approval rating if you’re in the Soviet Republic of Kalifornistan as an example.

but they’re also going to need to install a threaded bung for the rear O2 sensor after the converter. The OE has one built into it so once you cut that out then one needs to be added.

.

just buy a cheap CC for emissions and swap in a midpipe for regular driving.

Edit: better for the engine to run catless anyways. The exhaust ports suck enough on their own without the cat being in the way. Yea, you get the P0420 code but who cares? It will breathe better and make more power. Every little bit helps!

You could try and find a used one, however I would be worry about buying a dud. Magnaflow makes good open cell cats. If not them I would consider another aftermarket one.
