I took a florida trip about a month ago. I averaged 75-80 and got 19mpg. Wonderful trip, I actually enjoyed the "boring" parts. We did have to stop for gas more often than I'd like, but that just gave me cigarette breaks.
Honestly, if I have to make another trip over 400-500 miles, I take another car due to gas. But I am so glad I got to take it on one decent trip.

I commute 37 miles one way to work .. about 30 of them being highway. ... But since I've had the 8 I find myself taking the back raods instead!!!!!
I tend to feel like a caged animal when I'm stuck behind a long line of boring commuters driving 68 mph to pass the traffic in the right lane going 67 mph.
THE LEFT LANE IS FOR PASSING PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!
Ohhh I get the road rage just thinking about it.!!

We took our first road trip in the 8 two weekends ago. Nothing major, only 240 miles one way up to Kansas City to the Eric Clapton concert. Awesome trip and the concert was great too! The first quarter in twistys to clear the Ozarks then 77 MPH on cruise control on a rolling hills four lane. The car preformed flawlessly and looked damn good while doing it! A few things are worth noting.
o MPG for the trip: 22.1
o Hit 92 MPH without realizing it getting out of a squeeze on the freeway.
o No seat fatigue
o Sirius Sat radio is great in the sticks
o Driving an 8 is just fun! fun! fun!
o The trunk held our luggage and all the stuff we bought at "The Plaza"
o We only saw one other 8 and that was 15 miles from home on the return trip.
Gotta love this car!

It's great to hear owners taking their 8's on longer trips. Ever since I got the car and realized that my range (mostly city) is about 250 km's (155 mi) per full tank, I've been pretty weary of taking her on a road trip. Hearing these good road trip experiences gives me more confidence to take her out.
I guess I'll just have to take the gas-stops whenever one appears.

I've taken my 8 out on numerous 1300-1500 road trips in the short year i've owned it.
I've never thought of it as less dependable than any other car...and the 10 hour drive down to atlanta couldn't have been more comfortable.
Those were back before the emissions reflash, and I averaged right about 22.5 MPG for all the highway driving. It really is a great car to trips, assuming your luggage is either small or odd-shaped The trunk will surprise you with how large it is, but that freaking opening is the achillies heel.

So any other suggestions or tips to save gas and get good gas mileage? I have to make the 2100 mile trip to san fran from MN in a few weeks. With gas prices sky rocketing, i want to get the best fuel economy ever. Im driving a 2005, 6 speed, with 17,500. I just got my 8 and love it so far. I want to be ready to make this drive but want to know if there is anything i can do to get the best gas mileage. I usually always shift at 3300 rpm and im planning on keeping the cruise set at 77 mph on average. Any suggestions and tips would be awesome. Im also running 89 octane if that makes a difference.
Oh yeah, does 89 get better mileage than 91 or 93?
