Sounds like synchros to me. Though if it's doing it in reverse it may be something more serious. I can't remember, does the RX-8 have a reverse synchro?

Another 2nd Gear goes down. You can read about it here:

And also, rgonza had this to say:

Did you try SYN tranny fluid? Worth a try considering %/$ of new tranny. How many miles and would you say you are a Racer, very aggressive driver?

no reverse syncro, it's a straight cut, not helical.

oh ok....its got 21,300 miles on it....but it has a rebuilt title because of a fender bender, the front right fender and something from the front right suspension was replaced, so i dont think the dealer will work on it

Most everyone agrees that it shifts better with SYN, I feel its a cheap band-aid. Mazda put free synchros in mine but that was in 72', they were just getting started.

I had a new Stealth that would miss upshifts to second gear on occasion. Of course the dealer could never replicate the problem. Once I hit 30K miles, I changed the fluid to GL-5 and it was like having a new tranny. Later that car had synchro damage and the tranny shop put 10w-30 in it before doing repairs and it fixed that problem. Try changing the fluid first. The dealer can't help, they are only parts changers.

Lol, Abbid is right. You might start having people saying what an idiot you are calling yourself a racer and not even knowing if you put Syn in the tranny.
