Track Insurance

ok I have searched and made plenty of phone calls to various insurance agencies and I have yet to find anyone that provides a true "track insurance". So here is my question...what do most of you track guys have.
I have State Farm and full coverage will not cover the car if it is in an accident on the track...whether there is an instructor present, non-competitive, nothing...no coverage on the track period.
So, whats that leave? liabilty so you can cover someone else if you hit them? Or if you haul your car to and from the track on a trailer and only run it on the track would you even need to have insurance at all?

most of the insurance company (like statefarm, all state, etc) will not provide coverage for track.

You need to go to some "Smaller" companies to get coverage, but again the coverage is very limited and not a lot of $$$ in return. and they usually want you to get their "street" insurance as a package.

You can get some MotorSports Magazine and find them in the back of the magazine.

You shouldn't have to worry about that. The track days that I went to have you sign a consent form basically that says you aren't responsible/ won't sue etc etc for anything that happens on the track.

There are insurance company's that provide track day insurance. What you basically do is enter the amount you want them to cover and they will give you a flat rate for the two days or so the track day is going on. If you car gets totaled you get whatever you insured it for basically.

It is expensive (like 100-300) for two days but probably worth it if you can't afford to lose your car.

This is a company that you can get insurance for HPDE events if you run with NASA (national auto sport association).

To insure $16000 it told me it would cost $112. Guess its cheaper than I thought

The Lockton insurance mentioned above seems very good and appropriate for HPDE's. Just keep in mind, it MUST be an HDPE! I was running time trial events that are essentially the same thing (most of the day is untimed lapping sessions) but since it was technically a time trial event, it wouldnt be covered. It MUST be an untimed HPDE event.

Lockton has a good reputation - if I had the need I wouldn't hesitate to use them

If you tow to the track you don't need insurance. Most dedicated track / race cars don't have an ounce of insurance, at most they only have "STP" (storage, transportation, paddock) coverage. My race MR2 isn't covered for anything, its inexpensive enough that it would suck if something happened but it wouldn't take all that long to work up the spare funds to replace it either. That's how most people out there in the advanced groups, time trials, and racing are

Some companies totally forbid any kind of road racing with your car, other companies will not cover if it is a timed, or actual competition races.
This I know well, my wife is an insurance agency manager.
Drivers Ed, HPDE are covered by a few.
It's kind of a grey area and is best that you read your policy very closely.

Below are 2 companies that my wife told me about.

I was at a lapping day and a fellow RX8 owner, not active here, totaled his car on the track. State Farm said they would cover his loss because it was a "drivers school" and not a timed event or competition. They warned him that it would be the last time this type of loss would be covered.
I'll bet his rates went up substantially.

Don't accidents usually happen just outside of the racetrack?

Very true, I almost was hit staging THREAD. Another thing to consider is the type of track your running on. Pocono makes HPDE drivers sign a form making them liable for any damage to the cushioned NASCAR walls they have, very expensive I am told.

I've yet to be at a track that doesn't have a "you break it, you bought it" policy. Those pieces of metal armco wall are pricey I hear. Fingers crossed I never find out... only been in the tires so far and that's usually free

The fact normal insurance doesn't cover track days limits the kind of car I drive. I don't buy cars that I can't afford to write off completely.

I'm not saying I'd want to lose my car, but if I did, it wouldn't ruin me financially.
