TPMS on snow tires and winter wheels - pleasant surprise

Finally mounted my winter wheels (17" momos) and snow tires.

Pleasant surprise - No TPMS warning light came on.

And yes, I have TPMS.

wtf?

I have TPMS on the car. The new wheels and tires were ordered without TPMS.

when i bought my 2nd hand winter tires/rims and put them on, i didnt get a warning light... i was like oh sweet maybe these rims have the sensors in them.. but no....

and then come to find out my stock 18 inch rims don't have them either (so i can only assume when the tires were changed, someone put regular valve stems on - as its regular practice to swap out the stems)...

so i dunno whats up but i was a little pissed to find out i dont have the sensor.

But I have TPMS. It's come on before while running my Dunlop stockers.

p.s. - The 8 handles amazingly well in the snow and slush with Hankook iPike W409s. I am more than a little amazed at how well. I'm very happy given that the W409s are relatively new.

Drive for 10-15 minutes. TPMS light will come on. It just doesn't go on right away.

Bummer. I was afraid of that.

Oh well. I just hope the TPMS doesn't flash constantly.

It will flash constantly after 10-15 minutes of each drive start (I think it's more like 10). Any drive less than the waiting time interval will be TPMS-light-free.

You'll get used to it and won't notice it much. At least, I don't notice it much.

Astral, I may put some electrical tape over it if it's too annoying.

Thanks.

Just another thought... Are your summer wheels/tires within range of the rf sensor when you start up? In other words, are you storing your wheels with TPMS sensors in your garage, close to your RX-8? If so, the TPMS sensor may be happy when you start your car. Of course, as Astral said, the sensor will eventually light up. However, this may explain why you have not observed the warning light yet.

Cheers

TPMS sensor only reads when you are driving over 15mph. So it should never pick up tires of the car next to you.

Yup, it's true. I'm now running some Dunlop Winter Sport M3's and they are beautiful, handled amazingly in Vancouver's first snow of the season last Saturday. Way better than my old FWD DSM car.

My sensors obviously work much quicker-- backing out of the garage this morning the light turned on and when I checked one tire was at 26 lbs. Aired it up and everything was fine.
I think you are thinking about the programming of new/replacement TPMs when you need to drive at over 15 mph for some time.

I think you're right, it may be only for the reprogramming. My mistake.
